JOB DESCRIPTION

REPORTS TO: Principal

Professional Duties and Regulations

Teacher requirements are as per Teachers’ (Terms and Conditions of Employment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1987, Schedule 3, Regulation 5, including:

  • Exercise of general professional duties: a teacher shall carry out professional duties under reasonable direction of the principal or board as applicable.
  • Exercise of particular duties: a teacher shall perform duties as reasonably directed by the principal or board.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Planning: plan and prepare courses and lessons; teach according to pupils’ educational needs; set and mark work; assess, record and report on development and attainment.
  • General duties: promote general progress and well-being of pupils; provide advice and guidance; keep relevant records and reports; communicate with parents and external bodies; participate in meetings.
  • Assessment/Reporting: provide or contribute to oral and written assessments and references for pupils.
  • Staff Development/Professional Development: participate in staff development; review teaching methods and programmes; engage in further training; advise and cooperate with the principal and others on curriculum and assessment development.
  • Discipline/Health and Safety: maintain good order and safety; participate in meetings related to curriculum, administration or pastoral arrangements.
  • Public Examinations: assist in preparing pupils for public examinations and assess and report on such examinations; supervise during examinations.
  • Review and Development of Management/Administration: contribute to selection and development of teachers; co-ordinate or manage work of teachers; participate in curriculum, organisation and pastoral reviews; assist in administrative tasks and equipment management; attendance and supervision duties as required.
  • Number of days/Hours of work: adhere to defined annual days and hours, with specified breaks; adhere to attendance and break requirements; definitions of year and week.
  • Staff Cover: provide supervision and teaching for absent colleagues within the stated conditions and thresholds.

Section 1 - Essential Criteria

The following are essential criteria to be measured at shortlisting and may be explored during interview. Ensure you explain how you meet these criteria in your application.

  • Qualifications/Professional Membership - Hold a teaching qualification recognized to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland; hold an Honours Degree (2:2 or above) in History or a related subject up to Advanced Level.
  • Experience - Minimum 1 year’s experience teaching History (including Advanced Level) in the last 8 years; the use of a range of teaching strategies; experience in enrichment activities; experience using digital media/technology to enhance learning.
  • Knowledge - Ability to seek and utilise opportunities to develop professional competence.
  • Other - Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.

Section 2 - Essential Criteria (Interview)

  • Knowledge - Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum; safeguarding and child protection; SEND Code of Practice; IT systems and digital tools; current assessment methods.
  • Skills/Abilities - Effective teaching and classroom management; inclusive learning environment; collaborative work with pupils, colleagues, parents and the wider community; ability to motivate and work as part of a team.
  • Values Orientation - Evidence of alignment with the school’s values and ethos.

Section 3 - Desirable Criteria

  • Honours Degree in History or related subject; 3 years’ experience teaching History (including Advanced Level) in the last 8 years, including practice teaching.

Disclosure of Criminal Background

The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (Northern Ireland) Order 2007 defines regulated activity. If recommended for appointment to a post involving regulated activity, an Enhanced Disclosure of Criminal Background will be required. You will be expected to meet the cost of an Enhanced Disclosure Certificate. Details of payment will be provided at pre-employment.
