JOB PURPOSE
Under the direction of the class teacher/outreach teacher/Education Authority, assist with the educational support and the care of pupils with special educational needs in or outside the classroom.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The specific duties will be determined by the principal/outreach teacher/Education Authority officer.
- SPECIAL CLASSROOM SUPPORT
Assist the teacher with the support and care of pupils with special educational needs, including enabling access to the curriculum and attending to personal needs. - Develop an understanding of the specific needs of the pupils supported.
- Assist with authorized programmes, participate in evaluation, and encourage pupil participation.
- Contribute to the inclusion of pupils in mainstream schools under the teacher's guidance.
- Assist with operational difficulties and non-invasive medical/clinical issues related to pupils' disabilities.
- Support behavioural management programmes as directed.
- Assist pupils in moving around the school and on transport.
- GENERAL CLASSROOM SUPPORT
Help pupils learn effectively in groups and individually by managing the learning environment, clarifying instructions, and motivating pupils. - Assist in areas requiring reinforcement or development, promote independence, and help pupils stay on task.
- Meet physical/medical needs as required, encouraging independence.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding home/pupil/teacher/school information.
- Establish supportive relationships with pupils.
- Prepare resources and materials for pupils and play sessions.
- Supervise pupils during activities, including extracurricular and off-site activities, following risk assessments.
- Provide continuity of care, supervise play and cloakrooms, and handle minor medical issues.
- Ensure a safe environment and report any signs requiring immediate attention.
- ADMINISTRATION
Assist with classroom administration and pupil progress records. - Contribute to feedback and record-keeping about pupils.
- Assist with producing materials and resources.
OTHER DUTIES
Attend training sessions. Assist work placement students. Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or Education Authority.
