REPORTS TO: Principal

PROFESSIONAL DUTIES OF A TEACHER

Regulations Terms and Conditions of Employment Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1987, Schedule 3, Regulation 5:

  • Exercise of general professional duties: A teacher shall carry out professional duties as required, under the reasonable direction of the principal or the employing authority.
  • Exercise of particular duties: Teachers shall perform duties reasonably assigned by the principal or the board, including planning, teaching, assessment, student well-being, and participation in meetings.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Planning and preparing lessons
  • Teaching and assessing students
  • Promoting student well-being and providing guidance
  • Participating in staff development and training
  • Maintaining discipline and health and safety standards
  • Preparing students for public examinations
  • Contributing to school management activities
  • Managing workload within specified hours and days
  • Providing cover for absent teachers as required
  • Other duties may be assigned as appropriate.

The post-holder is expected to promote equality and good relations in accordance with legislation.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

  • Qualifications: Recognized teaching qualification for Northern Ireland
  • Experience: Minimum 5 years supporting diverse learners, including those with SEN; experience with challenging behaviour management
  • Registration: Registered with GTCNI before starting

Section 2 - Additional Essential Criteria

  • Knowledge of NI Curriculum, Safeguarding, SEND Code of Practice, and IT tools
  • Skills: Effective teaching, classroom management, collaboration, and problem-solving
  • Values: Alignment with school ethos and values

Section 3 - Desirable Criteria

  • Additional qualifications like Team Teach, language programmes, monitoring pupil progress, experience in SPiM or special schools, extensive SEN experience
