Professional Duties of a Teacher
- Exercise of general professional duties as circumstances may require.
- Exercise of particular duties as assigned by the Principal or Board.
Planning:
- Plan and prepare courses and lessons.
- Teach, set and mark pupils’ work, both in school and elsewhere.
- Assess, record and report on pupils’ development, progress and attainment.
General:
- Promote the general progress and well-being of individual pupils and of any class or group.
- Provide advice and guidance on educational, social matters and future careers, including information on expert advice.
- Make records and reports on pupils’ personal and social needs, respecting confidentiality.
- Consult and communicate with parents.
- Co-operate with approved external persons or bodies.
- Participate in meetings relevant to the above purposes.
Assessment / Reporting:
- Provide or contribute to oral and written assessments, reports and references for pupils.
Staff Development / Professional Development:
- Participate in staff development and performance review schemes.
- Review teaching methods and programmes of work.
- Engage in arrangements for further training and professional development.
- Advise and cooperate with the Principal and other teachers on course preparation, teaching materials, programmes, methods and pastoral arrangements.
Discipline / Health and Safety:
- Maintain good order and discipline among pupils, safeguarding their health and safety on and off school premises.
- Participate in meetings relating to the curriculum and the organisation of the school.
Public Examinations:
- Arrange, prepare and assess pupils for public examinations.
- Record and report assessment outcomes.
- Supervise and present pupils during examinations.
Review and Development of Management Activities / Administration:
- Contribute to the selection and professional development of other teachers, including induction and assessment of probationary teachers.
- Coordinate or manage the work of other teachers.
- Participate in administrative tasks related to curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions.
- Assist in the supervision of support staff and manage ordering and allocation of equipment and materials.
- Attend assemblies and register pupils’ attendance as required.
Staff Cover:
- Supervise and teach pupils when a teacher is unavailable, subject to enrolment and availability conditions.
Hours and Attendance:
- Full-time teacher required to work 195 days per year, with no more than 190 teaching days.
- Available for 1,265 hours per year, excluding travel and time off school premises for preparation and marking.
- Maximum of 25 classroom teaching hours per week in primary or special schools, and 23.5 hours in secondary schools.
- No mid-day supervision unless employed under a separate contract.
- Mandatory break of at least 30 minutes between 12:00 and 14:00 (or 14:30 for nursery schools).
Responsibilities may be reviewed in light of changing circumstances and additional duties of a similar nature may be assigned. Post-holder is expected to promote good relations, equality of opportunity, and comply with equality legislation at all times (Section 75 NI Act 1998).
Essential Criteria
- Qualifications: Teaching qualification recognized to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland. Registration with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up the post.
- Experience: Minimum 4 years of demonstrable experience teaching Key Stage 2 and achieving positive learning outcomes. Experience using a range of effective classroom strategies to support and challenge pupils of all abilities, including those with SEN. Experience using digital media and technology to enhance teaching and learning.
- Knowledge: Knowledge of the Northern Ireland Curriculum. Understanding of Safeguarding and Child Protection policy/practice. Knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice. A range of teaching strategies to meet pupil learning needs. IT systems such as digital classroom tools, media, tablets and mobile technologies. Current assessment methods.
- Skills / Abilities: Effective teaching and classroom management skills to inspire and challenge pupils. Ability to provide a supportive, inclusive learning environment. Initiative, problem-solving and flexibility. Collaboration to promote positive relationships with pupils, colleagues, parents and the wider community. Teamwork and motivation of self and others.
- Values Orientation / School Ethos: Evidence of how experience and approach reflect the school’s values and ethos.
Desirable Criteria
- Experience of assisting with or coordinating a key area of the curriculum.
- Experience of assisting with music or sport delivery, or holding relevant qualifications.
- Evidence of continuous professional development.
