Teacher – Primary
REPORTS TO
Principal
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
- Hold a teaching qualification recognised for grant‑aided schools in Northern Ireland.
- Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland before appointment.
- Demonstrable experience of using a range of effective classroom strategies to support and challenge pupils of all abilities, including those with special educational needs.
- Demonstrable experience of using digital media/technology to enhance teaching and learning.
- Demonstrable willingness to contribute to the wider life of the school.
DESIRABLE CRITERIA
- Minimum of 1 year’s demonstrable experience teaching Key Stage One or Key Stage Two with positive learning outcomes.
- Coaching qualification in a sport or evidence of competitive sport participation.
- Ability to lead an area of the curriculum such as numeracy or PE.
- Effective teaching and classroom management skills.
- Collaborative team working and motivation.
- Reflection of the school’s values and ethos.
PROFESSIONAL DUTIES
- Planning and preparing courses and lessons.
- Teaching pupils according to their educational needs, including setting and marking students’ work.
- Assessing, recording and reporting on pupil development, progress and attainment.
- Promoting the progress and well‑being of individual pupils and the class, providing advice and guidance on further education and careers.
- Making and maintaining records of pupils’ personal and social needs.
- Communicating and consulting with parents.
- Co‑operating with external bodies approved by the employing authority and Board of Governors.
- Participating in meetings related to curriculum, administration or pastoral functions.
- Contributing to oral and written assessments and references for individual pupils and groups.
- Participating in staff development schemes, performance reviews, professional training and self‑review of teaching methods.
- Advising and co‑operating with the Principal and other teachers on course design, teaching materials and pastoral arrangements.
- Maintaining discipline and ensuring pupils’ health and safety on school premises and during authorised activities elsewhere.
- Co‑ordinating preparation of pupils for public examinations and supervising exam activities.
- Participating in the selection and professional development of other teachers, including induction of probationary teachers and coordination of co‑ordinated work.
- Performing administrative tasks such as ordering equipment and materials.
- Attending assemblies, registering attendance and supervising pupils as part of duties.
- Ensuring availability for teaching duties as required, observing suitable break times.
- Providing cover for other pupils when required under specified circumstances.
WORK HOURS
Full‑time teachers are required to be available for 195 days per year (maximum 190 teaching days) and 1,265 hours per year, excluding time spent off‑school preparing lessons, marking and travelling. A break of at least 30 minutes is required between 12:00 and 14:00 for most schools.
OTHER DUTIES
Other duties appropriate to the grade may be assigned in accordance with changing circumstances. The post‑holder is expected to promote good relations, equality of opportunity and compliance with equality legislation at all times.
