TEACHERS’ (TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT) REGULATIONS (NORTHERN IRELAND) 1987 SCHEDULE 3

Exercise of general professional duties

  • A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require.
  • If employed as a teacher in a school under the reasonable direction of the principal of that school.
  • If employed by a board on terms not assigned to any one school, under the reasonable direction of that board and the principal of any school in which the teacher may be required to work.

Exercise of particular duties:

  • A teacher (other than a principal) shall perform, in accordance with any directions reasonably given by the principal, such particular duties as may be assigned from time to time.
  • A teacher shall perform, in accordance with any reasonable direction from time to time by the board or the principal of any school where the teacher is required to work, such particular duties as may be assigned.

Planning

  • Planning and preparing courses and lessons.
  • Teaching, according to pupils’ educational needs, including setting and marking work to be carried out by pupils in school and elsewhere.
  • Assessing, recording and reporting on pupils’ development, progress and attainment.

General

  • Promoting the general progress and well-being of individual pupils and of any class or group of pupils assigned to the teacher.
  • Providing advice and guidance to pupils on educational and social matters and on their further education and future careers.
  • Making records of and reports on the personal and social needs of pupils.
  • Communicating and consulting with the parents of pupils.
  • Communicating and cooperating with approved persons or bodies outside the school.
  • Participating in meetings arranged for any of the purposes described above.

Assessment/Reporting

  • Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to individual pupils and groups.

Staff Development / Professional Development

  • Participating, if required, in any scheme of staff development and performance review.
  • Reviewing from time to time his/her methods of teaching and programmes of work.
  • Participating in arrangements for his/her further training and professional development as a teacher.
  • Advising and cooperating with the Principal and other teachers on the preparation and development of courses, teaching materials, programmes, methods of teaching, assessment and pastoral arrangements.

Discipline / Health and Safety

  • Maintaining good order and discipline among pupils in accordance with the policies of the employing authority and safeguarding their health and safety on the school premises and during authorised school activities elsewhere.
  • Participating in meetings about curriculum, administration, or organisation of the school, including pastoral arrangements.

Public Examinations

  • Participating in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations and assessing pupils for the purposes of such examinations.
  • Recording and reporting such assessments; and supervising pupils during such examinations.

Review and Development of Management Activities / Administration

  • Contributing to the selection, appointment and professional development of other teachers, including induction and assessment of probationary teachers.
  • Coordinating or managing the work of other teachers.
  • Participating in the review, development and management of activities relating to curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions.
  • Participating in administrative and organisational tasks related to such duties, including management or supervision of support staff, and ordering and allocation of equipment and materials.
  • Attending assemblies as required.
  • Registering the attendance of pupils and supervising pupils, whether duties are performed before, during or after school sessions.

Number of Days / Hours of Work

  • A full-time teacher shall be available for work on 195 days in any year of which not more than 190 days should involve teaching in a classroom situation.
  • A teacher shall be available to perform such duties at times and places specified by the Principal or as required by a Board, for 1,265 hours in any year, exclusive of preparation and marking time.
  • A teacher may not be required to teach older than 25 hours in any week in a primary or special school, and 23.5 hours in any week in a secondary school.
  • All teachers shall have a break of at least 30 minutes between 12 noon and 2:00 pm.

Staff Cover

  • Supervising and teaching pupils whose teacher is unavailable.
  • Other duties of a similar nature and appropriate to the grade may be assigned from time to time.

The post-holder is expected to promote good relations, equality of opportunity and pay due regard for equality legislation at all times.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA – SECTION 1

  • Qualifications: Hold a teaching qualification recognised for grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland.
  • Experience: Minimum of 6 months demonstrable teaching experience of Foundation Stage, inclusive of pupils of all abilities and those with special educational needs.
  • Registration: Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA – SECTION 2

  • Knowledge: Northern Ireland Curriculum, safeguarding and child protection policy/practice, SEND Code of Practice, various teaching strategies, IT systems such as digital classroom tools, and current assessment methods.
  • Skills/Abilities: Effective teaching and classroom management, inclusive learning environment, initiative, problem-solving, flexibility, collaborative attitudes, team working, and motivation of self and others.
  • Values/Orientation: Evidence that experience and approach reflect the School’s values/ethos.

DESIRABLE CRITERIA – SECTION 3

  • Minimum of 1 year demonstrable teaching experience of Foundation Stage with positive outcomes.
  • Experience monitoring pupil progress, performance, targeting and intervention.
