Reports to: Principal

PROFESSIONAL DUTIES

  • Plan and prepare courses and lessons.
  • Teach pupils according to their educational needs, including setting and marking work.
  • Assess, record and report on pupil development, progress and attainment.
  • Promote the general progress and well-being of individual pupils and groups.
  • Provide advice and guidance to pupils on educational, social matters, further education and career options.
  • Maintain good order and discipline, safeguarding pupils’ health and safety.
  • Communicate and consult with parents and external bodies approved by the authority.
  • Participate in staff development, performance review, CPD and quality improvement activities.
  • Support public examination preparation, assessment and supervision.
  • Contribute to selection, induction and professional development of other teachers.
  • Carry out administrative duties related to curriculum, pastoral arrangements and resource management.
  • Co-ordinate staff cover and supervise pupils where the assigned teacher is absent.
  • Maintain statutory and contractual working hours and break requirements.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA – SECTION 1

  • Teaching qualification recognized for grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland. Qualifications must be obtained at the date of taking up appointment.
  • Registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before appointment.
  • One year of teaching experience in a Social and Communication class in a specialist provision within a mainstream post-primary setting.
  • Experience of teaching young people with SEN in a post-primary environment.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA – SECTION 2

  • Knowledge of the Northern Ireland Curriculum, SEND Code of Practice, safeguarding and child protection policy, information technology systems and current assessment methods.
  • Effective teaching and classroom management skills to inspire and challenge pupils to raise achievement.
  • Proven ability to provide a supportive, inclusive learning environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively to promote positive relationships with pupils, colleagues, parents and the wider community.
  • Evidence of how your experience and approach reflect the school’s values and ethos.

DESIRABLE CRITERIA – SECTION 3

  • Minimum two years of paid teaching experience in English and/or Maths to KS3 pupils.
  • Minimum two years of paid teaching experience in English and/or Maths to KS4 pupils.
  • Evidence of further CPD training working with pupils with autism or SEBW.

DISCLOSURE OF CRIMINAL BACKGROUND

The Education Authority will undertake an Enhanced Disclosure of Criminal Background for regulated activity. Candidates will be expected to cover the cost of the certificate. Details will be provided at pre-employment stage.
