Reports to: Principal

Professional Duties of a Teacher

In accordance with the Teachers’ (Terms and Conditions of Employment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1987, Schedule 3, Regulation 5, the teacher shall carry out the general professional duties and such other duties as may be reasonably assigned. Specific duties include:

  • Exercise of general professional duties
  • Planning and delivering courses and lessons, teaching pupils according to their educational needs, and assessing, recording and reporting on pupil development, progress and attainment.
  • Planning and preparing courses and lessons
  • Teaching pupils and setting/marking work
  • Assessing, recording and reporting pupil development, progress and attainment

General duties include promoting pupil well-being, providing guidance on educational and social matters, communicating with parents and other relevant bodies, and participating in meetings as appropriate.

  • Maintaining relevant pupil records and reports
  • Communicating with parents and external bodies as approved
  • Participating in meetings related to school matters

Other areas include assessment/reporting, staff development/professional development, discipline/health and safety, public examinations, and activities related to management and administration of the school. The responsibilities also cover attendance, supervision, and hours/days of work as set out in the terms of employment.

Assessment/Reporting: providing or contributing to oral and written assessments and references relating to pupils

Staff Development/Professional Development: participation in staff development and performance review; ongoing review of teaching methods and programmes; involvement in further training

Discipline/Health and Safety: maintaining good order and safety; participating in curriculum and pastoral arrangements

Public Examinations: preparing pupils for public examinations and recording/reporting assessments

Review and Development of Management/Administration: contributing to staff selection, development, and management of curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions

Administrative/Organisational tasks related to duties, including supervision of staff and management of equipment

Section 1 – Essential Criteria

  • Hold a teaching qualification recognized to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland
  • Minimum of 2 years’ demonstrable experience of teaching in a primary school with positive learning outcomes
  • Experience using a range of classroom strategies to support and challenge pupils, including those with Special Educational Needs
  • Experience using digital media/technology to enhance teaching and learning
  • Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post

Section 2 – Essential Criteria

  • Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum, safeguarding, and SEND Code of Practice
  • Knowledge of a range of teaching strategies to meet learning needs
  • Knowledge of IT systems and digital classroom tools
  • Knowledge of current assessment methods to inform teaching

Skills: effective teaching and classroom management, inclusive learning environment, initiative and problem-solving, teamwork and collaboration

Values: alignment with school ethos

Section 3 – Desirable Criteria

  • Experience teaching Foundation Stage (P1) and pupils with Special Educational Needs
  • Experience in Learning through Play and phonics-based approaches
  • Piano Grade 5 or above (desirable)
