Reports To: Principal

Professional Duties

  • Planning and Preparation
    • Plan and prepare courses and lessons.
    • Teach pupils according to their educational needs, setting and marking work.
    • Assess, record and report on pupils’ development, progress and attainment.

General Responsibilities

  • Promote pupils’ progress and well-being.
  • Provide advice and guidance on educational, social matters and future careers.
  • Maintain records of pupils’ personal and social needs.
  • Communicate and consult with parents.
  • Co-operate with approved external persons or bodies.
  • Participate in relevant meetings.

Assessment and Reporting

  • Provide or contribute to oral and written assessments and reports.

Staff Development / Professional Development

  • Participate in staff development schemes and performance reviews.
  • Review teaching methods and programmes.
  • Co-operate with the Principal and colleagues on course planning, teaching materials and pastoral arrangements.

Discipline / Health and Safety

  • Maintain good order and discipline, safeguarding health and safety on-premises and during authorised activities.
  • Participate in curriculum and pastoral meetings.

Public Examinations

  • Arrange pupils’ preparation for public examinations and assess them accordingly.

Review and Development of Management Activities / Administration

  • Contribute to the appointment, induction and assessment of other teachers.
  • Co-ordinate or manage work of other teachers.
  • Assist in administrative tasks relating to curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions.
  • Assist in ordering and allocating equipment and materials.
  • Attend assemblies and supervise pupils as required.

Hours of Work

  • Full-time teacher: available for 195 days a year, not more than 190 days of classroom teaching.
  • Teacher not in a residential establishment: available for 1,265 hours a year, excluding preparation, marking and travel time.
  • Maximum classroom teaching: 25 hours/week in primary or special school, 23.5 hours/week in secondary school.
  • Breaks: minimum 30 min between 12:00–14:00 (and 12:00–14:30 for nursery teachers).

Staff Cover

  • In schools with enrolment 222 or less (or greater for primary 1/2 and nursery classes), teachers other than supply teachers may not be required to provide cover after the second day of absence. Outcome: cover duties are limited by enrolment and time of absence.

Qualifications and Professional Membership

  • Hold a recognised teaching qualification for grant-aid schools in Northern Ireland.
  • Registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before appointment.

Essential Criteria

  • At least 1 year of demonstrable experience teaching Key Stages 1 or 2 with positive outcomes.
  • Experience using effective classroom strategies across all abilities, including SEN.
  • Experience incorporating digital media/technology in teaching.
  • Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum, safeguarding, child protection, SEND Code of Practice, assessment methods, and IT systems.
  • Effective teaching, classroom management, inclusive environment, initiative, problem-solving, flexibility, collaboration, team working, and motivation.
  • Evidence of alignment with the school’s values and ethos.

Desirable Criteria

  • Minimum 3 years of experience at Key Stages 1 or 2 with positive outcomes.
  • Experience monitoring progress, target setting, intervention, and teaching pupils for whom English is not the first language.
  • Experience with pupils who have special educational needs.

  • Enhanced Disclosure of Criminal Background required if the role involves regulated activity; candidate responsible for cost.
