Reports To: Principal

Professional Duties of a Teacher (Schedule 3 of the Teachers’ (Terms and Conditions of Employment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1987, Regulation 5)

  • Exercise general professional duties, including objectives listed below.
  • Exercise particular duties as reasonably assigned by the principal or board.

Key Responsibilities

  • Planning and preparing courses and lessons.
  • Teaching pupils according to their educational needs, including setting and marking work.
  • Assessing, recording and reporting on pupils’ development, progress and attainment.
  • Promoting the general progress and well-being of individual pupils and any class or group.
  • Providing advice and guidance to pupils on educational and social matters and future careers.
  • Communicating and consulting with parents and external bodies approved by the authorities.
  • Participating in meetings and arrangements for curriculum and pastoral matters.
  • Contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references for pupils.
  • Participating in staff development schemes and performance reviews.
  • Reviewing methods of teaching and programmes of work; participating in further training.
  • Advising and cooperating with the principal and other teachers on preparation and development of courses of study and teaching materials.
  • Maintaining good order and discipline in accordance with policies and safeguarding health and safety.
  • Participating in curriculum or administrative meetings and pastoral arrangements.
  • Participating in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations and assessing them.
  • Contributing to the selection and professional development of other teachers and coordinating staff work.
  • Participating in administrative and organisational tasks including provisioning of equipment and materials.
  • Supporting attendance registration and supervision of pupils during school sessions.
  • Availability for duties as required: 195 working days per year, up to 190 teaching days; 1,265 hours of non-class duties per year.
  • Ensuring at least 30-minute breaks between 12:00 and 14:00 (or 14:30 for nursery).
  • Supervising and teaching pupils when other teachers are unavailable, subject to enrolment limits.

Essential Criteria (Section 1)

  • Qualifications: Hold a teaching qualification recognised for teaching in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland.
  • Experience: Minimum 2 years of demonstrable teaching experience at Key Stage 1 or Key Stage 2, using effective classroom strategies, supporting children with Special Educational Needs and Newcomers, and employing digital media/technology.
  • Other: Registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.

Essential Criteria (Section 2 – Interview Stage)

  • Knowledge: Northern Ireland Curriculum, safeguarding & child protection policy, SEND Code of Practice, a range of teaching strategies, IT systems, and assessment methods.
  • Skills/Abilities: Effective teaching and classroom management, inclusive learning environment, initiative and problem solving, collaboration with pupils, colleagues, parents and community, teamwork and motivation.
  • Values Orientation: Evidence of alignment with the School’s values/ethos.

Desirable Criteria (Section 3)

  • Minimum 3 years’ demonstrable experience of teaching by August 2026 at Key Stage 1 & 2.
  • Experience assisting with Physical Education delivery and a relevant qualification.
  • Experience assisting with Shared Education delivery.
  • Experience teaching pupils with English as a second language.

The Education Authority will undertake an Enhanced Disclosure of Criminal Background for posts involving regulated activity under the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (Northern Ireland) Order 2007.
