Responsible to: Cleaning Supervisor or other authorised person.

Job purpose: Undertake, as part of a team, the cleaning of any area within the premises, designated by the line manager.

Responsibilities

  • Sweep, suction clean, mop, dry buff, spray clean, spray wax, machine scrub and dry; strip and re‑polish floors using appropriate equipment.
  • Clean and remove stains from soft floor surfaces (carpets/matting) using the appropriate cleaning method.
  • Clean toilet and shower area including fixtures and fittings.
  • Clean, wash and dust ledges, walls, fixtures, fittings and internal surfaces up to 3.35 m; polish furniture where appropriate.
  • Empty and clean internal litter bins and remove litter to designated collection points.
  • Cover colleagues on sick leave in line with Education Authority procedures.
  • Report absences in line with the Education Authority’s Procedure and complete relevant forms signed by the Building Supervisor.
  • Wear protective clothing or workwear issued for cleaning duties.
  • Wearing flat‑soled enclosed‑toe footwear when carrying out cleaning duties.
  • Use and care for any cleaning equipment issued; report defects immediately.
  • Complete all necessary paperwork.

General Conditions

All duties must be carried out to comply with Health and Safety at Work (NI) Order 1978, Acts of Parliament, Statutory Instruments and Regulations, COSHH Regulations, and Codes of Practice. All duties will be carried out in the working conditions normally inherent in the particular job. All duties will be carried out for jobs up to and including those in the same grade, provided such duties are within the employee’s competence.

Training

Employees will accept any training for jobs graded at a higher level than their own. Payment will be made only where required by the authority for higher‑level duties. Training includes induction and refresher training.

Qualifications

  • Experience as a school cleaner.
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods and machinery.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety requirements, including COSHH.
  • Ability to use own initiative and work under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, including English language proficiency.
  • Effective organisation and planning skills.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Flexible approach to work and willingness to carry out instruction.

Desirable Criteria

  • Three months’ experience of cleaning outside the home environment.
  • Demonstrable experience using a range of commercial cleaning tools (e.g. buffing machinery).

Additional Requirements

Posts involving work in educational institutions must meet the provisions of the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (NI) Order 2007. An enhanced disclosure check is required, with a cost of £33. The cost is to be paid by the applicant at the pre‑employment stage.
