Overview: This role involves the exercise of general professional duties as specified for a Teacher.
Professional Duties of a Teacher:
- A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require, including:
- if employed as a teacher in a school under the reasonable direction of the principal of that school;
- if employed by a board on terms where not assigned to any one school, under the reasonable direction of that board and the principal of any school in which they may be required to work as a teacher.
Planning:
- Planning and preparing courses and lessons; teaching according to pupils’ educational needs, including setting and marking work; assessing, recording and reporting on development, progress and attainment.
Core Responsibilities:
- Promoting the general progress and well-being of pupils and any class or group; providing advice and guidance on educational and social matters including information about further education and career sources; making relevant records and reports;
- Communicating with parents and with relevant persons or bodies outside the school as approved by the employing authority and the Board of Governors;
- Participating in meetings for purposes described above.
Assessment/Reporting:
- Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to pupils, as appropriate.
Staff Development/Professional Development:
- Participating in staff development and performance review as required;
- Reviewing methods of teaching and programmes of work;
- Engaging in opportunities for further training and development as a teacher;
- Advising and cooperating with the Principal and other teachers on course development, teaching materials, programmes, methods of teaching and pastoral arrangements.
Discipline/Health and Safety:
- Maintaining good order and discipline and safeguarding health and safety on and off school premises as required.
- Participating in meetings related to curriculum, administration and pastoral arrangements.
Public Examinations:
- Participating in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations and in assessing, recording and reporting such assessments; participating in supervising pupils during examinations.
Management and Administration:
- Contributing to the selection for appointment and development of other teachers; coordinating or managing the work of other teachers; participating in development of curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions.
- Participating in administrative tasks related to duties, including supervision of support staff and allocation of equipment and materials.
- Attendance and supervision of pupils as required; registering attendance and supervising as appropriate.
Hours and Schedule:
- Full-time teachers shall be available for work on 195 days per year, with limitations on teaching hours per week depending on school type, and prescribed break requirements.
- Times and locations may be set by the Principal or the Board where applicable; annual hours and conditions apply, including travel and lesson preparation time.
- Mid-day supervision and break requirements as specified; year definition and weekly hours as detailed in regulations.

Qualifications and Experience (Essential):
- Hold a teaching qualification which meets the requirements for recognition to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland.
- Minimum of 1 year’s demonstrable experience of teaching children with additional needs within Key Stages 2–4 to achieve positive learning outcomes.
- Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.
Knowledge, Skills and Other Requirements (Essential):
- Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum, safeguarding and child protection policies, SEND Code of Practice, and a range of teaching strategies to meet pupils’ learning needs.
- Knowledge of IT systems and digital tools; knowledge of current assessment methods to inform teaching.
- Effective teaching and classroom management; ability to provide a supportive, inclusive learning environment; ability to work collaboratively with pupils, colleagues, parents and the wider community; ability to work as an effective team member.
Desirable Criteria:
- Experience and training of using a range of classroom strategies to support and challenge pupils with SEN; SEN classroom experience.

- The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (Northern Ireland) Order 2007 defines regulated activity. If appointed to a role involving regulated activity, an Enhanced Disclosure of Criminal Background will be undertaken, with the candidate meeting the cost at pre-employment.
