Job Overview

Lead the Mathematics Department in line with the School Development Plan, ensuring interventions, resources and curriculum are effectively managed and that teachers are supported across the department.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of the Mathematics Department in accordance with the School Development Plan.
  • Lead self‑evaluation at departmental level to improve performance and pupil outcomes.
  • Monitor, evaluate and review pupil learning, reporting outcomes to pupils, staff, governors and parents.
  • Implement appropriate interventions for pupils not achieving predicted levels.
  • Support whole‑school intervention programme by providing information on pupil underachievement and departmental support measures.
  • Ensure effective use of resources and maintain a productive learning environment.
  • Ensure reasonable and purposeful measures for pupils with additional needs, in line with the Whole School provision map.
  • Ensure and review effective schemes of work throughout the school year.
  • Offer support and advice to non‑specialist teachers delivering Mathematics in SPiM and SEN settings.
  • Teach pupils up to Level 2, developing and supporting their learning to achieve high examination success.
  • Exercise general professional duties.

Professional Duties of a Teacher

  • Plan and prepare courses and lessons.
  • Teach pupils, setting and marking work.
  • Assess, record and report on pupil development, progress and attainment.
  • Promote pupil well‑being and progress.
  • Provide advice and guidance to pupils on educational and social matters.
  • Maintain records of pupils’ personal and social needs.
  • Communicate with parents about pupil progress.
  • Co‑operate with external bodies as approved by the School.
  • Participate in meetings regarding curriculum, administration and pastoral functions.
  • Contribute to oral and written assessments, reports and references.
  • Engage in staff development, performance reviews, professional development programmes and training.
  • Participate in discipline, health and safety measures, safeguarding and supervision.
  • Assist in preparing pupils for public examinations and supervise examinations.
  • Support recruitment, induction and training of other teachers.
  • Take part in administrative tasks related to curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions.
  • Register attendance and supervise pupils during school sessions.
  • Adhere to required working days and hours as set out in regulation.
  • Provide staff cover as required.

Essential Criteria

  • Teaching qualification meeting recognition for grant‑aided schools in Northern Ireland.
  • Degree or equivalent Level 6 qualification focused on Mathematics.

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of demonstrable experience teaching Mathematics at Key Stage 3 & 4 with positive learning outcomes.
  • Experience leading departmental development and improvement.
  • Evidence of leading departmental planning incorporating children at Stage 3 of the Code of Practice.

Other

  • Registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before employment.

Additional Essential Criteria (measured during interview)

  • Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum, Safeguarding & Child Protection, SEND Code of Practice.
  • Understanding of range of teaching strategies and technology tools.
  • Knowledge of current assessment methods.
  • Effective teaching and classroom management skills.
  • Ability to provide an inclusive learning environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with pupils, colleagues, parents and community.
  • Teamworking and motivation skills.
  • Evidence of alignment with school values and ethos.
