PROFESSIONAL DUTIES OF A TEACHER
A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require, including:
- if employed as a teacher in a school under the reasonable direction of the principal of that school;
- if employed by a board on terms under which the teacher is not assigned to any one school, under the reasonable direction of that board and of the principal of any school in which the teacher may be required to work as a teacher.
“Exercise of particular duties” – a teacher shall perform, in accordance with directions reasonably given by the principal, such particular duties as may be reasonably assigned from time to time.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Planning and preparing courses and lessons.
- Teaching according to pupils’ educational needs, including setting and marking work in school and elsewhere.
- Assessing, recording and reporting on the development, progress and attainment of pupils.
- Promoting the general progress and well-being of pupils and providing advice and guidance on educational and social matters, including information about sources of more expert advice.
- Making records and reports on the personal and social needs of pupils, in compliance with professional considerations.
- Communicating and consulting with parents of pupils and cooperating with relevant bodies outside the school as approved by the employing authority and Board of Governors.
- Participating in meetings for purposes described above.
- Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to individual pupils and groups of pupils as appropriate.
- Participating in staff development and performance review; reviewing teaching methods and programmes of work; pursuing further training and professional development.
- Advising and cooperating with the Principal and other teachers on courses of study, teaching materials, teaching programmes, assessment and pastoral arrangements.
- Maintaining good order and discipline among pupils and safeguarding their health and safety on school premises and during authorised activities elsewhere.
- Participating in meetings related to the school curriculum, administration or pastoral arrangements.
- Participating in arrangements for public examinations, including preparation, assessment, recording and supervision of examinations.
- Contributing to the selection and development of other teachers, coordinating or managing their work, and involvement in review and management of curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions.
- Participating in administrative and organisational tasks related to duties, including management or supervision of support staff and allocation of equipment and materials.
- Attending assemblies (as applicable) and registering/supervising pupil attendance as required.
- Working within the number of days/hours requirements and complying with break and travel provisions as specified; ensuring a balanced workload and adherence to school policies.
- Staff cover responsibilities in line with school policy and agreed arrangements for absence or non-availability of teachers.
- Promoting good relations, equality of opportunity and compliance with equality legislation in accordance with Section 75 of the Northern Ireland Act (1998).

PERSON SPECIFICATION
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
- Hold a teaching qualification which meets the requirements for recognition to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland.
- Hold a degree or equivalent Level 6 qualification which allows teaching Home Economics or Health and Social Care as the main subject.
- Minimum of 2 years’ demonstrable experience of teaching Home Economics and Health and Social Care at Key Stages 4 and 5 with positive learning outcomes; experience using a range of teaching strategies.
- Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.
SECTION 2 – ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
- Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum, safeguarding and child protection policy/practice, SEND Code of Practice, and IT in education.
- Effective teaching and classroom management skills, ability to promote inclusive learning, collaborate with colleagues, engage with parents and the wider community.
- Ability to work as part of a team and motivate self and others; alignment with school values and ethos.
SECTION 3 – DESIRABLE CRITERIA
- Planned teaching experience at Key Stage 5 with Home Economics and Health and Social Care; experience with pupils of all abilities including those with SEND.
