Professional Duties of a Teacher
- Exercise of general professional duties under the reasonable direction of the principal or board.
- Planning and preparing courses and lessons; teaching according to the educational needs of pupils; assessing, recording and reporting on pupil development, progress and attainment.
- Promoting the general progress and well-being of individual pupils and groups; providing advice and guidance on educational and social matters; communicating with parents and outside bodies.
- Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to individual pupils and groups.
- Participating in staff development and performance review; reviewing teaching methods and programmes of work.
- Maintaining good order and discipline among pupils; safeguarding their health and safety.
- Participating in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations.
- Contributing to the selection and professional development of other teachers; managing the work of other teachers.
- Attending assemblies; registering attendance of pupils and supervising them.
Number of days/Hours of work
- A full-time teacher shall be available for work on 195 days in any year, with not more than 190 days involving teaching children in a classroom situation.
- A teacher may not be required to teach for more than 25 hours in any week in a primary school.
- Teachers shall have a break of at least 30 minutes between 12 noon and 2.00 pm.
Section 1 – Essential Criteria
- Qualifications/Professional Membership: Hold a teaching qualification recognised in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland.
- Experience: Minimum of 2 years’ experience of teaching at Key Stage 2; evidence of coordinating an area of the NI curriculum; experience using effective classroom strategies.
- Other: Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.
Section 2 – Additional Essential Criteria (Interview)
- Knowledge: Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum; Safeguarding and Child Protection policy; SEND Code of Practice; teaching strategies; Information Technology systems; current assessment methods.
- Skills / Abilities: Effective teaching and classroom management skills; ability to provide a supportive learning environment; ability to work collaboratively.
- Values Orientation: Evidence of how experience reflects the School’s Values/ethos.
Section 3 – Desirable Criteria
- Qualifications and Experience: Contribution to the extra-curricular life of the school.
