Reports to Principal

Professional Duties of a Teacher

  • Exercise general professional duties as required by circumstances.
  • Planning and preparing courses and lessons.
  • Teaching, including setting and marking work.
  • Assessing, recording and reporting on pupil development, progress and attainment.
  • Promoting general progress and well-being of pupils and classes.
  • Providing advice and guidance on educational, social matters, further education and careers.
  • Communicating and consulting with parents and external parties.
  • Participating in meetings related to curriculum, administration and pastoral arrangements.
  • Providing oral and written assessments, reports and references.
  • Participating in staff development and professional development schemes.
  • Reviewing teaching methods and programmes.
  • Advising and cooperating with the principal and other teachers on course development, materials, assessment and pastoral arrangements.
  • Maintaining good order and discipline and safeguarding health and safety.
  • Preparing pupils for public examinations, assessing, recording and reporting.
  • Contributing to selection and professional development of other teachers, induction, assessment of probationary teachers.
  • Coordinating or managing work of other teachers.
  • Participating in administrative and organisational tasks related to curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions.
  • Managing or supervising support staff, ordering and allocating equipment and materials.
  • Attending assemblies and registering attendance of pupils.
  • Supervising pupils and performing duties at reasonable times as directed.

Working hours and availability:

  • Full-time teacher available for 195 days a year, not more than 190 days teaching in classroom.
  • Available to perform duties for 1,265 hours a year, exclusive of off-school time, marking and travelling.
  • Maximum teaching hours per week in primary or secondary schools.
  • Required breaks and mid-day supervision provisions.

Staff cover:

  • Supervise and teach pupils whose teacher is not available under specified conditions.
  • Conditions for coverage based on school enrolment, type of class, etc.

Other responsibilities:

  • Reviewing and developing management activities and administration.
  • Participating in selection, coordination, supervision of support staff, ordering equipment.
  • Promoting good relations, equality of opportunity, pay, and legislation.

Essential Criteria

Qualifications
  • Hold a teaching qualification meeting the requirements for recognition to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland.
  • Hold a degree or equivalent Level 6 qualification prepared to teach mathematics as the main subject.
  • Qualifications obtained by the date of appointment.
Experience
  • Minimum of 1 year demonstrable experience teaching mathematics at Key Stage 3.
