Responsibilities and Duties
- Exercise of general professional duties in accordance with the Teachers’ terms and conditions, under the direction of the principal and the employing authority as applicable.
- Plan and prepare courses and lessons; teach pupils according to their educational needs; set and mark work to be carried out by the pupils in school and elsewhere.
- Promote the general progress and well-being of individual pupils and of any class or group of pupils assigned to you; provide advice and guidance on educational and social matters and future careers.
- Maintain good order and discipline among pupils and safeguard their health and safety on school premises and during authorised activities elsewhere.
- Provide or contribute to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to pupils and groups of pupils.
- Participate in staff development and performance review; review and develop teaching methods and programmes of work; contribute to course development and pastoral arrangements.
- Communicate and consult with parents; cooperate with other teachers and external bodies as approved; participate in meetings for curriculum, administration and pastoral purposes.
- Participate in arrangements for public examinations and pupil preparation, assessment and supervision during examinations.
- Assist in the selection and development of other teachers, coordinate or manage the work of colleagues as required; participate in management tasks related to curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions.
- Attend assemblies and manage pupil attendance as required; be available to perform duties within the terms of the contract, including hours and days as determined by the authority.
Section 1 – Essential Criteria
- Qualifications/ Professional Membership: Hold a teaching qualification recognized to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland; hold a degree or equivalent Level 6 qualification prepared to teach Science as main subject.
- Experience: Demonstrable experience of teaching Science at Key Stage 4 with positive learning outcomes; experience using a range of teaching strategies; experience using digital media/technology to enhance teaching; experience using diverse classroom approaches to support learners, including those with Special Educational Needs.
- Other: Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post; complete pre-employment checks.
Section 2 – Essential Criteria (Additional)
- Knowledge: Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum; safeguarding and child protection policy; SEND Code of Practice; range of teaching strategies; IT systems and digital tools; current assessment methods.
- Skills / Abilities: Effective teaching and classroom management; ability to provide a supportive, inclusive learning environment; ability to work collaboratively with pupils, colleagues, parents and the wider community; ability to work as a team and motivate self and others.
