PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential Criteria

  • Possession of either:
  • Option 1: Level 2 (or equivalent) certificate or diploma qualification and at least 6 weeks of experience in a formal learning environment or equivalent placement.
  • Option 2: Minimum 12 months of experience working in a formal learning environment.
  • For Irish Medium Schools: Ability to speak and/or write in Irish.
  • Core Knowledge of:

    • Health and safety requirements.
    • Development needs of children and/or young people.
    • Child protection and safeguarding.

    Interview/Assessment Skills to support child‑centred learning:

    • Effective planning and organising.
    • Adherence to agreed systems and plans.
    • Teamworking and flexibility.
    • Effective communication.

    Desirable Criteria

    • Completed training relevant to working with children with SEN (e.g., SEBD, ASD, ADHD, Language and Communication).
    • Level 3 (or equivalent) qualification from a recognised accredited awarding body.
    • Level 2 passes in English and/or Mathematics, or higher‑level qualifications.
    • Experience working with children with special educational needs.
    • Experience as a Classroom Assistant in a nursery, primary, post‑primary, specialist provision unit or using digital technologies for learning.

    Job Purpose:

    Under the direction of the class teacher/outreach teacher/Education Authority, assist with the educational support and the care of pupil(s) with special educational needs who are in or outside the classroom.

    Main Duties and Responsibilities

    Special Classroom Support

    • Assist the teacher with the support and care of pupil(s) with special educational needs (e.g., enable access to the curriculum, attend to dietary, feeding, toileting needs).
    • Develop an understanding of the specific needs of the pupil(s) to be supported.
    • Assist with authorised programmes (Education Plan, Care Plan), participate in evaluation and encourage pupil(s) participation.
    • Contribute to the inclusion of the pupil in mainstream schools under the class teacher’s directions.
    • Assist with operational and non‑invasive medical/clinical difficulties related to pupils’ disabilities.
    • Support the implementation of behavioural management programmes as directed.
    • Assist pupils in moving around school and on/off transport.

    General Classroom Support

    • Assist pupils to learn effectively in group and individual situations by:
    • Clarifying instruction and ensuring use of equipment and materials.
    • Motivating and encouraging pupils as required.
    • Providing reinforcement or development where needed.
    • Promoting independence and keeping pupils on work.
    • Meeting required physical/medical needs while encouraging independence.
  • Be aware of school policies, procedures and confidentiality, maintaining appropriate confidences.
  • Establish supportive relationships with pupils.
  • Prepare and produce appropriate resources for pupils and manage materials for play sessions.
  • Supervise groups of pupils or individual pupils on specified activities, including ICT and extracurricular activities, as directed.
  • Assist with off‑site activities following a risk assessment.
  • Provide continuity of adult care (e.g., supervising play, cloakrooms, hand washing, toileting).
  • Administer prescribed medicines and manage minor injuries.
  • Ensure a safe environment for pupils.
  • Report to the class teacher any signs or symptoms indicating a pupil may require expert or immediate attention.
  • Administration

    • Assist with classroom administration.
    • Support the teacher and professionals in recording pupil progress.
    • Maintain pupil progress records.
    • Provide regular feedback to the teacher/officer.
    • Duplicate written materials and assist with production of charts, displays, recordings, catalogues and processing of books and resources.

    Other Duties

    • Attend relevant in‑service training.
    • Assist work placement students with practical tasks.
    • Perform any other duties assigned by the principal/outreach teacher/Education Authority officer within the level of the post.
