PERSON SPECIFICATION NOTES TO JOB APPLICANTS

  1. You must clearly demonstrate on your application form under each question, how, and to what extent you meet the required criteria as failure to do so may result in you not being shortlisted. You should clearly demonstrate this for both the essential and desirable criteria, where relevant.
  2. You must demonstrate how you meet the criteria by the closing date for applications, unless the criteria state otherwise.
  3. The stage in the process when the criteria will be measured is outlined in the table below.
  4. Shortlisting will be carried out on the basis of the essential criteria set out in Section 1 below, using the information provided by you on your application form.
  5. Please note that the Selection Panel reserves the right to shortlist only those applicants that it believes most strongly meet the criteria for the role.
  6. In the event of an excessive number of applications, the Selection Panel also reserves the right to apply any desirable criteria as outlined in Section 3 at shortlisting, in which case these will be applied in the order listed. It is important therefore that you also clearly demonstrate on your application form how you meet any desirable criteria.

SECTION 1 - ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

The following are essential criteria which will initially be measured at the shortlisting stage and which may also be further explored during the interview/selection stage. You should therefore make it clear on your application form how, and to what extent you meet these criteria. Failure to do so may result in you not being shortlisted.

  • Qualifications/ Professional Membership: Qualifications must be obtained at the closing date for completed applications: Hold a teaching qualification which meets the requirements for recognition to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland.
  • Experience: Demonstrable experience of at least 2 years’ teaching in a paid capacity in the Foundation Stage or Key Stage 1 to achieve positive learning outcomes. Demonstrable working knowledge of Whole School Nurture Approach to Education in primary School setting systems. Demonstrable working knowledge of Pastoral Care: Promoting Positive Behaviour. Demonstrable working knowledge of a range of teaching strategies to suit different learning styles, abilities and Special Needs.
  • Other: Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.

SECTION 2 - ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

The following are additional essential criteria which will be measured during the interview/selection stage.

  • Knowledge: Demonstrable working knowledge of Northern Ireland Early Years Curriculum: Nursery/Foundation Stage/Key Stage 1. Special Needs Code of Practice and the identification and assessment of special needs and SEND. Understanding of Social, Emotional, Behavioural and Wellbeing needs (SBEW) and the promotion of positive behaviour. Principles of Nurture, Adverse Childhood Experiences and Trauma Informed Practice. Demonstrable working knowledge of a range of teaching strategies to suit different learning styles, abilities and Special Needs. Knowledge and understanding of Safeguarding and Child Protection policy/practice. Demonstrate knowledge of appropriate approaches, strategies and interventions to meet the SBEW needs of pupils.
  • Skills / Abilities: Ability to promote positive relationships with pupils, colleagues, parents and the wider community. Effective leadership that promotes a trauma informed approach. Ability to develop effective partnerships with parents and carers to enable them to support their children’s learning, well-being and development. Ability to model appropriate and effective strategies and interventions with pupils, teachers and parents through Nurture Groups and the whole school nurturing approaches. Establish, maintain and organise a learning group environment in line with the principles of nurture which offers a secure, structured and predictable setting where children can develop confidence and self-esteem. Ability to successfully manage multi-priorities in a fast-paced and changing school environment. Direct and Co-ordinate the work of the Nurture Classroom Assistant. Prioritise, plan and organize workload effectively. Ability to analyse information and make decisions. Ability to use Management Information Systems including using Microsoft Office programmes.
  • Values Orientation / Identification with School Ethos: Evidence of how your experience and approach to work reflect the School’s Values/ethos.

SECTION 3 - DESIRABLE CRITERIA

Some or all of the desirable criteria may be applied by the Selection Panel in order to determine a manageable pool of candidates. Desirable criteria will be applied in the order listed. You should make it clear on your application form how, and to what extent you meet the desirable criteria, as failure to do so may result in you not being shortlisted.

  • Qualifications and Experience: Having undergone training in Nurture and Boxall profiling, an approved modular qualification in Nurture. Have a minimum of 1 year’s paid experience of teaching in a Nurture unit within a primary School.

DISCLOSURE OF CRIMINAL BACKGROUND

The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (Northern Ireland) Order 2007 defines working directly with children or young people or in specified places as ‘regulated activity’. In the event that you are recommended for appointed to a post that involves ‘regulated activity’, the Education Authority will be required to undertake an Enhanced Disclosure of Criminal Background. Please note that you WILL be expected to meet the cost of an Enhanced Disclosure Certificate.
