PERSON SPECIFICATION NOTES TO JOB APPLICANTS

You must clearly demonstrate on your application form under each question, how, and to what extent you meet the required criteria as failure to do so may result in you not being shortlisted. You should clearly demonstrate this for both the essential and desirable criteria, where relevant. Shortlisting will be carried out on the basis of the essential criteria set out in Section 1 below, using the information provided by you on your application form. Please note that the Selection Panel reserves the right to shortlist only those applicants that it believes most strongly meet the criteria for the role. In the event of an excessive number of applications, the Selection Panel also reserves the right to apply any desirable criteria as outlined in Section 3 at shortlisting. It is important therefore that you also clearly demonstrate on your application form how you meet any desirable criteria.

SECTION 1 - ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

The following are essential criteria which will initially be measured at the shortlisting stage and which may also be further explored during the interview/selection stage. You should therefore make it clear on your application form how, and to what extent you meet these criteria. Failure to do so may result in you not being shortlisted.

  • Qualifications/ Professional Membership: Applicants must at the time of taking up the post: Hold a teaching qualification which meets the requirements for recognition to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland. Hold an honours degree (minimum 2:2) in Technology & Design or a cognate subject which has a high academic content in the curricular areas taught in Technology & Design A level; Hold a grade C (or higher) in Technology & Design A level (or equivalent). Hold relevant qualifications relating to workshop practice as recognised by the Department of Education (NI) to meet health and safety requirements.

SECTION 2 - ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

The following are additional essential criteria which will be measured during the interview/selection stage.

  • Knowledge: Knowledge of the Northern Ireland Curriculum, Knowledge and understanding of Safeguarding and Child Protection policy/practice, Knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice, Knowledge of a range of teaching strategies to meet the learning needs of pupils, Knowledge of Information Technology systems such as digital classroom tools/media and the use of tablets/mobile technologies, Knowledge of current assessment methods to inform teaching.
  • Skills / Abilities: Effective teaching and classroom management skills to inspire and challenge pupils to raise achievement, Proven ability to provide a supportive, inclusive learning environment, Ability to work collaboratively to promote positive relationships with pupils, colleagues, parents and the wider community, Ability to work as an effective member of a team, and to motivate self and others.

SECTION 3 - DESIRABLE CRITERIA

Some or all of the desirable criteria may be applied by the Selection Panel in order to determine a manageable pool of candidates. You should make it clear on your application form how, and to what extent you meet the desirable criteria, as failure to do so may result in you not being shortlisted.

  • Qualifications and Experience: Preference may be given to those applicants who at the time of the appointment: Hold an honours degree (minimum 2:1) in Technology & Design or a cognate subject which has a high academic content in the curricular areas taught in Technology & Design A level at the time of taking up appointment; and/or Hold a grade (A*-B) in Technology & Design A level (or equivalent); and/or Have qualifications, training and/or experience to offer an additional subject, which at the time of appointment, best meets the curricular needs of the School; and/or Have qualifications or experience to assist with the Games programme within the School; and/or Have qualifications, training and/or experience to assist with Banbridge Academy’s weekend extra-curricular Team Games or Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme expeditions or School Drama productions; and/or Have experience of teaching A level Technology & Design; and/or Have experience of teaching another subject to GCSE level.

DISCLOSURE OF CRIMINAL BACKGROUND

The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (Northern Ireland) Order 2007 defines working directly with children or young people or in specified places as ‘regulated activity’. In the event that you are recommended for appointed to a post that involves ‘regulated activity’, the Education Authority will be required to undertake an Enhanced Disclosure of Criminal Background. JOB DESCRIPTION

Key Tasks

JOB PURPOSE: To ensure effective delivery of the relevant programmes of study within the School in accordance with School Policies and in pursuit of high standards of pupil achievement. To assist in the implementation of all of the School policies and the School’s Pastoral programme.

  • To teach Technology & Design across the entire age range in the School;
  • To teach other subjects as required across the entire age range in the School;
  • Additional duties as detailed below.

RESPONSIBILITY AREAS

Within the sphere of Technology & Design education to:

  • A. teach throughout the School, up to ‘A’ level standard, in a manner that develops and supports pupils’ learning so that they achieve high levels of success in examinations.
  • B. monitor, evaluate and review pupil learning programmes and their delivery in order to ensure their effectiveness and report outcomes to pupils, relevant staff, Governors and parents as requested by the Senior Leadership Team (SLT).
  • C. develop self in order to enhance performance and thus pupil outcomes.
  • D. secure, monitor, develop and produce resources allocated to ensure equality and effectiveness of pupil experience.

Within the remit of generally helping pupils to achieve success:

  • E. carry out general teacher duties.

KEY TASKS

  • A1 To teach Technology & Design up to and including A Level, as required by the Principal, using varied and innovative teaching strategies.
  • A2 To aid the HoD in drawing up suitable teaching programmes (schemes of work) in line with the requirements of the appropriate statutory bodies.
  • A3 To be aware of and implement as necessary, developments in all subjects taught that will further pupil progress.
  • A4 To implement the School’s homework, assessment and positive behaviour policies.
  • A5 To promote and organise enrichment activities including events, exhibitions and trips to raise the profile of the Department within the School and to foster enjoyment and satisfaction in the study of the subject by pupils.
  • A6 To maximise pupils’ involvement in the production of attractive and useful wall and other displays.
  • A7 To implement all School and departmental policies.
  • A8 As directed by the Principal, to teach an additional subject which best meets the needs of the School.
  • A9 To promote that aspect of the School’s ethos relating to cross community work and furthering the School’s education for mutual understanding and Shared Education programme.
  • A10 To teach Citizenship, Employability, Personal Development, Learning for Life and Work, Life Skills and/or ICT as requested by the Principal.
  • A11 To undertake organisation and participation in the department’s visits and educational trips.

B1 To set, annotate and mark appropriate homeworks, classwork, tests and examinations; and to maintain a well ordered and up-to-date mark book/computer record of all work set and marks recorded.

B2 To implement a set of standardised common assessment tasks within the Department and utilise these marks in order to monitor and track progress against individual pupil targets.

B3 To make use of agreed statistical analysis procedures to review pupil and staff performance and to set annual attainment targets.

B4 Within all subjects taught to ensure the requirements of the Key Elements and Whole Curriculum Skills & Capabilities of the NI Revised Curriculum are met.

B5 To provide pupils with regular constructive feedback and positive reinforcement on all aspects of their performance.

B6 To report to parents through at least two written reports annually per year group, or one written report and other statistical reports per year group, as instructed by the Principal.

B7 To report to parents through Parents’ Meetings, Open Nights and Consultation Interviews.

C1 To maintain an up-to-date knowledge of the courses being taught.

C2 To review pedagogy regularly in order to ensure the most effective and appropriate style to improve pupil performance.

C3 To undertake BT, EPD, PRSD (or any similar performance scheme) assessments/observations as directed by the Principal.

C4 Undertake development and training to increase confidence and competence in teaching their subject and to develop skills to further meet the needs of the pupils.

D1 To aid the HoD in requisition of materials annually.

D2 To ensure that all equipment and accommodation used is kept in the best possible condition.

D3 To ensure the Health and Safety of all pupils and staff within the classroom and other work places.

GENERAL TEACHER DUTIES

  • E1 To carry out duties as detailed in the Teachers’ (Terms and Conditions of Service) Regulations (NI) 1987.
  • E2 To carry out all duties in a manner in which they comply with:
    • a. current Health and Safety legislation.
    • b. the requirements of the Children’s Order.
    • c. the School’s security requirements.
    • d. the requirements of Banbridge Academy’s Policy Documents.
    • e. the requirements of the Education Authority and the Department of Education.
  • E3 To act as a Form Teacher/Tutor to an assigned Form/Tutor group and to carry out related duties in accordance with the general job description of a Form Teacher/Tutor.
  • E4 To carry out a share of pupil supervisory duties in accordance with published rosters.
  • E5 To participate in appropriate meetings with colleagues, parents and pupils.
  • E6 To implement all School Policies and procedures.
  • E7 To play an active part in furthering the School’s Ethos as a multi-cultural, inter-denominational community promoting such values as caring, tolerance and co-operation.
  • E8 To undertake any reasonable duties as requested by the Principal or his appointed Deputy.
  • E9 To help with the organisation and delivery of some School extra-curricular activities outside the area of Technology & Design.

These duties are not necessarily comprehensive and are subject to annual amendment by the Principal, after consultation with the post holder.

Applicants should give detailed information of modules, courses and subjects studied as part of their qualifications, together with the number of years each was studied. Applicants should also give details of experience of teaching, indicating length of experience of teaching the GCSE & A level specifications.
