Reports To: Principal
Professional Duties
- Exercise general professional duties and particular duties as directed by the principal or board.
- Planning, preparing, teaching, assessing, and reporting on pupils’ development, progress, and attainment.
- Promoting pupils’ progress and well-being, providing advice and guidance on education, social matters, and future careers.
- Communicating with parents, cooperating with external bodies, and participating in meetings related to curriculum and pastoral arrangements.
- Contributing to assessments, reports, and references for individual pupils and groups.
- Participating in staff development, performance review schemes, and further professional training.
- Providing advice and cooperation on course preparation, teaching materials, and assessment methods.
- Maintaining discipline and safeguarding pupils’ health and safety on the school premises and during school activities elsewhere.
- Participating in activities related to public examinations, including presenting and supervising pupils.
- Contributing to selection, appointment, and professional development of other teachers; coordinating or managing their work; assisting in administration and procurement of equipment.
- Attending assemblies, registering attendance, supervising pupils, and performing other administrative tasks as required by the principal or board.
- Supporting pupils in the absence of their teacher, subject to school policy on cover.
- Ensuring work hours comply with the statutory requirements (195 working days, 1,265 annual hours, break times, etc.).
Essential Criteria – Application Stage
- Qualifications / Professional Membership: Recognition to teach in grant-aid schools in Northern Ireland by the date of appointment; Honours degree 2:1 or above in an art-related subject.
- Experience: Teaching GCSE Art and Design; Teaching Moving Image Art to AS and/or A Level; Using classroom approaches to support and challenge pupils of all abilities, including those with SEN; Contributing to the school’s extracurricular programme.
- Other: Registered with the GTCNI before taking up the post; Pre-employment clearance.
Essential Criteria – Interview Stage
- Knowledge: NI CCEA Art curriculum; Improving student learning and assessment for progress; Subject-specific teaching approaches and positive behaviour strategies; History of Art with emphasis on contemporary practice.
- Skills / Abilities: Effective communication and interpersonal skills; Use of SIMS management system; Target setting and constructive feedback; Data utilisation, initiative, problem-solving, flexibility; Collaboration with pupils, colleagues, parents, and the community; Teamwork and self-motivation; Continuous professional development.
- Values / Ethos: Evidence that experience and approach reflect the school’s values and ethos.
Desirable Criteria
- Experience teaching Art and Design to AS and/or A Level (short-listing during application).
