Reports to: Principal

Professional Duties

  • Exercise of general professional duties.
  • Exercise of particular duties as directed by the Principal or Board.
  • Carry out particular duties assigned by the Principal or Board from time to time.
  • Comply with reasonable directions and particular duties in schools where the teacher is not a principal.

Planning

  • Plan and prepare courses and lessons.
  • Teach pupils, including setting and marking work to be carried out by pupils in school and elsewhere.
  • Assess, record and report on the development, progress and attainment of pupils.

General

  • Promote the general progress and well-being of individual pupils and any class or group of pupils.
  • Provide advice and guidance to pupils on educational and social matters and on their further education and future careers.
  • Make records of and reports on the personal and social needs of pupils.
  • Communicate and consult with parents of pupils.
  • Communicate and cooperate with approved external persons or bodies.
  • Participate in meetings arranged for the purposes described above.

Assessment/Reporting

  • Contribute to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to individual pupils and groups of pupils.

Staff Development/Professional Development

  • Participate, if required, in any scheme of staff development and performance review.
  • Review teaching methods and programmes of work from time to time.
  • Participate in arrangements for further training and professional development.
  • Advise and cooperate with the Principal and other teachers on the preparation and development of courses of study, teaching materials, teaching programmes, methods of teaching and assessment and pastoral arrangements.

Discipline/Health and Safety

  • Maintain good order and discipline among pupils in accordance with policies of the employing authority.
  • Safeguard pupils’ health and safety whenever they are on school premises or engaged in authorised school activities elsewhere.
  • Participate in meetings about curriculum, administration or organisation of the school, including pastoral arrangements.

Public Examinations

  • Participate in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations and in assessing pupils for the purposes of such examinations.
  • Record and report such assessments and participate in arrangements for pupils’ presentation for and supervision during examinations.

Review and Development of Management Activities/Administration

  • Contribute to the selection for appointment and professional development of other teachers, including induction and assessment of probationary teachers.
  • Coordinate or manage the work of other teachers.
  • Participate in review, development and management of activities relating to the curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions of the school.
  • Participate in administrative and organisational tasks related to duties above, including management or supervision of support staff and ordering and allocation of equipment and materials.
  • Attend assemblies as required.
  • Register attendance of pupils and supervise pupils, whether these duties are performed before, during, or after school sessions.

Working Hours

  • A full-time teacher shall be available for work on 195 days in any year, with no more than 190 days involving classroom teaching.
  • A teacher shall be available to perform duties at times and places specified by the Principal or Board, for 1,265 hours in any year (exclusive of off-school prep, marking, and travel).
  • Maximum teaching hours: 25 hours per week in primary or special schools, 23.5 hours per week in secondary schools.
  • Teachers must have a break of at least 30 minutes between 12 noon and 2.00 pm; nursery teachers between 12 noon and 2.30 pm.
  • All teachers may not be required to undertake mid-day supervision unless under a separate contract.

Staff Cover

  • Supervise and teach any pupils whose teacher is not available, subject to conditions based on school enrolment and the teacher’s role.

Person Specification

  • Qualifications / Professional Membership
  • Hold a teaching qualification recognised for grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland.
  • Hold a degree or equivalent Level 6 qualification prepared for teaching Art as main subject.
  • Hold a teaching qualification before taking up appointment.

Experience

  • Demonstrable experience of teaching Art at Key Stage 3, 4.
