REPORTS TO: School Principal

RESPONSIBLE FOR: Assisting the building supervisor in the supervision of staff which may include normal administrative processes.

JOB PURPOSE: Assist the building supervisor with on site supervision, cleaning and non-cleaning services, in accordance with the practices and procedures of the Education Authority.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Security: Security of the premises (including school meals accommodation) and its contents. Open and close the premises and grounds, ensure that all windows are closed, doors and gates are locked at the end of each day. Safe custody of the keys of the premises, allocation of keys to cleaning staff, operate and monitor security camera system, operate fire alarm and report any faults. Attend after-hour break ins and vandalism, report any suspicious activity during normal working hours, apply grit/rock salt in times of snow and frost.
  • Mechanical and Electrical Services: Efficient operation of the boiler/heating system, lighting and heating of the premises, monitor and document usage of fuel, water and electricity, inspect and report defects on firefighting equipment, maintain water levels of swimming/hydrotherapy pools.
  • Cleaning: Clean the premises except for school meals purposes, plan and control the work of cleaning staff, ensure all hard surfaces and paths are clean, empty litter bins daily, provide ongoing cleaning service, replenish toilet requisites, inspect sandpits, clean external signs and light covers, ensure cleaning standards meet Education Authority’s standards.
  • Porterage: Receipt and transport of stores and materials, despatch laundry and goods, prepare rooms for examinations and other purposes.
  • Administration: Prepare reports on cleaning and defects, organise employment of outside contractors, complete paperwork associated with the post, maintain records of consumable stocks and inventory.
  • Handyperson Duties: Within the competence of the post-holder.

General Conditions: All duties must comply with Health and Safety regulations, Acts of Parliament, COSHH Regulations, and Codes of Practice.

Training: Assistant building supervisors will accept training for jobs graded at higher levels and carry out induction and refresher training of cleaning staff.

Other Duties: Falling within the purview of the grade as required. This job description will be subject to review in light of changing circumstances.

PERSON SPECIFICATION:

Essential Criteria:

  • Have a minimum of six months’ demonstrable experience working as an assistant building supervisor and/or building supervisor and/or caretaker and/or cleaner in a school environment.
  • As a key holder, be prepared to respond to call outs at short notice, including during unsociable hours.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Hold a NEBOSH Health and Safety at Work qualification or equivalent.
  • Evidence of experience in using industrial cleaning equipment.
  • Evidence of experience of key holding duties.

DISCLOSURE OF CRIMINAL BACKGROUND: The Education Authority will be required to undertake an Enhanced Disclosure of Criminal Background for posts involving regulated activity.
