Professional Duties

  • Planning and preparing courses and lessons.
  • Teaching pupils according to their educational needs, including setting and marking work.
  • Assessing, recording and reporting on pupils’ development, progress and attainment.
  • Promoting the progress and well‑being of pupils and providing advice and guidance on educational and social matters.
  • Communicating with parents and external bodies, participating in meetings.
  • Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments and references for pupils.
  • Participating in staff development schemes and performance reviews.
  • Reviewing teaching methods and programmes, and cooperating with colleagues on course preparation.
  • Maintaining discipline and safeguarding health and safety of pupils.
  • Participating in curriculum‑related meetings and pastoral arrangements.
  • Preparing pupils for public examinations and supervising examinations.
  • Contributing to the selection of teachers and managing other teachers’ work.
  • Performing administrative tasks related to teaching duties.
  • Attending assemblies, registering attendance and supervising pupils as required.
  • Being available for teaching on 195 days a year, with a maximum of 190 teaching days (or 1,265 hours) per year.
  • Providing cover for absent teachers under specified conditions.

Essential Criteria

  • Qualifications / Professional Membership
    • Hold a teaching qualification recognised to teach in grant‑aided schools in Northern Ireland.
    • Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland before taking up the post.
  • Experience
    • Minimum of 1 year demonstrable experience teaching Key Stage 1 to achieve positive learning outcomes.
    • Experience using a range of effective classroom strategies for all abilities, including SED pupils.
    • Experience using digital media/technology to enhance teaching and learning.
  • Knowledge (Interview)
    • Knowledge of the Northern Ireland Curriculum.
    • Knowledge of safeguarding and child‑protection policy.
    • Knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice.
    • Knowledge of teaching strategies to meet diverse learning needs.
    • Knowledge of information technology systems and digital classroom tools.
    • Knowledge of current assessment methods.
  • Skills / Abilities (Interview)
    • Effective teaching and classroom management to inspire and challenge pupils.
    • Ability to provide a supportive, inclusive learning environment.
    • Initiative, problem‑solving and flexibility.
    • Collaboration to promote positive relationships with pupils, colleagues, parents and the wider community.
    • Teamwork and motivation of self and others.
  • Values Orientation / Identification with School Ethos (Interview)
    • Evidence of how experience and approach reflect the school's values and ethos.

Desirable Criteria

  • Minimum of 2 years demonstrable experience teaching Key Stage 1 pupils.
  • Experience assisting with music or drama in school productions.
  • Experience coordinating an element of STEM or holding a STEM‑related degree.

Disclosure

The Education Authority will require an Enhanced Disclosure of Criminal Background for regulated activity. Applicants will be responsible for the cost of the certificate.
