About the Role
We are seeking a dedicated, adaptable, and compassionate General Teaching Assistant to join a welcoming and inclusive primary school in Tower Hamlets. This is a long-term position starting after the Easter break, with the potential to extend for the right candidate. This role offers a unique blend of SEN and non-SEN responsibilities. You will be working across all year groups—from Early Years through to Key Stage 2—providing support to class teachers while also stepping in to support pupils with special educational needs (SEN) as required. Whether you are assisting in whole-class settings, leading small groups, providing 1:1 support, or working with children who have additional needs, your flexibility and dedication will be invaluable to the school community.
Key Responsibilities
- Work collaboratively with class teachers across all year groups to deliver engaging and effective lessons.
- Provide targeted support to small groups and individual pupils, ensuring progress is made in line with age-related expectations.
- SEN Support: Work 1:1 or with small groups of children with a range of special educational needs, including Autism (ASC), ADHD, Speech and Language delays, and Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.
- Adapt to the varying needs of different key stages, from EYFS through to KS2, and tailor support to meet individual learning plans (EHCPs and ILPs).
- Assist with classroom management, resource preparation, and maintaining a positive learning environment.
- Support pupils with emotional regulation, behaviour management, and social development using a patient and nurturing approach.
- Contribute to the wider school life, including lunchtime duties and school events.
Essential Requirements
- DBS: Must be registered with the DBS Update Service. (This is mandatory.)
- Experience: Previous experience working as a Teaching Assistant in a UK primary school setting, with exposure to both SEN and mainstream classroom environments.
- SEN Knowledge: A strong understanding of supporting children with additional needs, including ASC, ADHD, SEMH, and speech and language difficulties.
- Flexibility: Willingness and ability to work across all year groups and adapt to different SEN and non-SEN support requirements.
- Skills: Strong communication, patience, resilience, and the ability to build trusting relationships with children who may have complex needs.
- Eligibility: Right to work in the UK (we are unable to offer sponsorship for this role).
Desirable but Not Essential
- Relevant qualifications (e.g., CACHE Level 2/3, HLTA, or a degree).
- Team Teach, MAPA, or positive handling training.
- Experience supporting children with EHCPs and working alongside external professionals such as speech and language therapists or educational psychologists.
