We are seeking a Research Assistant position in energy systems modelling at Imperial College London. The Researcher will be expected to register as a PhD student and submit their PhD thesis at the conclusion of their research contract. The PhD thesis topic will be related and aligned with the research activities conducted in the project “Grid‑scale Energy Storage: Imperatives for Accelerating the Green Transition (RESTORATIVE)”, funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe’s Research and Innovation Programme under the Marie Skłodowska‑Curie Grant Agreement No. 101227219. RESTORATIVE includes 17 PhD students at seven universities and four companies across Europe. The position is based in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London.
Responsibilities
- Conduct internationally leading research in energy storage modelling within integrated sector‑coupled energy systems.
- Assess storage from the perspectives of integrated energy systems value and market trading rules/ancillary services arrangements.
- Build on open energy system models to develop improved storage representations, scenarios of deployment alongside variable renewable energy scenarios, and assess impacts on system cost.
- Review and model market arrangements to quantify benefits to storage operators and optimize instruments to reflect the value created.
- Participate in project meetings, outreach activities, and dissemination to popular press.
- Visit network partners during secondments (up to nine months total: up to six months in Switzerland and up to three months in Germany).
Qualifications
- First Class or Distinction Masters level degree, or equivalent, in a relevant scientific or technical discipline (e.g., engineering or sustainable energy) awarded by a recognised overseas university or institution.
- Overseas applicants whose English is not their first language must provide evidence of a satisfactory command of English before commencing the programme.
- Unable to have resided or carried out main activity in the UK for more than 12 months within 36 months before recruitment date.
Benefits
- Two secondments are planned: up to six months in Switzerland at ETH with Prof Tobias Schmidt, and up to three months in Germany at Siemens Energy.
