Salary: £24,755 - £26,111 per annum (FTE), pro rata; salary depends on experience.

Hours: 0.61 fraction (30 hours/week, 5 days/week for 34 weeks/year). Permanent position.

The Supported Studies team helps students achieve learning goals by providing adapted resources, accessible technology, and personalised support. The Learning Support Assistant works with diverse students, including those with disabilities and learning differences, to foster independence and confidence.

The college operates across three campuses in Stevenage and Hitchin, employing over 650 staff and serving more than 10,000 students annually. It was rated Good by Ofsted in December 2023.

Responsibilities:

  • Implement strategies to support the diverse learning needs of students, tailoring plans according to their EHCP, support plan, and individual targets.
  • Assist teaching staff in delivering high-quality teaching, including use of assistive technology, ensuring students achieve outcomes.
  • Interpret instructions and support students in following them, addressing communication challenges to provide equal access.
  • Maintain accurate departmental records and contribute to setting and monitoring individual targets, including annual review of EHCP outcomes.
  • Provide support with study skills, pastoral needs, and community access 1:1 or small groups to help students progress.
  • Assist with personal care, mobility aid, medication administration, and arrangements for students with complex support needs.
  • Support engagement with work experience opportunities, liaising with students, employers, and the Work Experience coordinator to arrange placements and coach students for interviews and on-job activities.
  • Adhere to confidentiality guidelines and college policies for SEND, health and safety, equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI), and safeguarding.
  • Attend curriculum events and meetings, contribute to curriculum team work, and continuously develop professional skills.
  • Promote equality and diversity, health and safety, safeguarding welfare of children and vulnerable adults, and comply with the college’s policies.
  • Carry out other duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Criteria:

  • Experience working with vulnerable young people who have SEND, including neurodiversity and social-emotional and mental health challenges.
  • Demonstrated commitment to improving opportunities for young people with SEND, particularly in independence, health and well-being, social inclusion, and work opportunities.
  • Level 2 qualification in learning support or a related discipline.
  • Strong communication skills, able to clearly explain outcomes and achievements.
  • Decision-making and problem-solving skills, exercising good judgement within role remit.
  • Adaptability to change and continuous professional development.
  • Customer-focused service orientation, delivering high quality service and seeing tasks through to completion.
  • Accountable for delivering results, organising work to meet standards and deadlines.
  • Capability to manage own performance against agreed objectives.
