We are seeking an experienced Deputy Technical Manager (Asbestos) to support the Technical Manager in maintaining the highest standards of technical quality, compliance, and operational excellence across a busy asbestos division. This is a senior, influential role suited to an established asbestos professional who enjoys technical leadership, auditing, and mentoring, and who wants to play a key role in maintaining UKAS accreditation and driving continuous improvement. While home based, the role will require regular travel across England.

  • Salary: £50,000 per annum + benefits

Key Responsibilities

  • Accreditation & Compliance
    • Support the Technical Manager in maintaining UKAS accreditation for asbestos inspection and testing activities (ISO 17020 and ISO 17025).
    • Ensure all asbestos works comply with current HSE guidance, CAR 2012, and UKAS requirements.
    • Assist with preparation for UKAS assessments, including managing non-conformances and ongoing compliance monitoring.
    • Act as the technical point of contact in the absence of the Technical Manager.
  • Site Audits & Quality Assurance
    • The organisation adopts an education-led approach to technical auditing and quality assurance. The postholder will prioritise coaching, mentoring, and corrective guidance to drive continual improvement.
    • Formal escalation, suspension of authorisations, or restriction of activities will only be applied where there is evidence of gross error, repeated non-conformance, or behaviours presenting a clear risk to safety, compliance, or UKAS accreditation.
    • Undertake site and staff-witnessed audits across all asbestos inspection and testing activities.
    • Conduct management, refurbishment, demolition and re-inspection survey audits.
    • Carry out 4-stage clearance audits, 2nd stage reinspections, and resurveys in line with UKAS as required.
    • Complete desktop reviews of reports, certificates, and technical data to ensure accuracy, consistency, and traceability.
    • Audit findings will be used primarily as a tool for professional development, competence assurance, and consistency, supported by targeted feedback and follow-up.
    • Support the maintenance and continual improvement of the Quality Management System.
  • Technical Oversight & Support
    • Provide day-to-day technical guidance, mentoring, and support to asbestos surveyors, analysts, and operational teams.
    • Assist with the development and review of method statements, technical procedures, and guidance notes.
    • Support investigations into technical issues, non-conformances, and client feedback.
  • Training & Competence
    • Support the delivery of internal technical training and refresher sessions.
    • Contribute to maintaining staff authorisations and competence records.
    • Support technical induction, mentoring, and development of new starters within the asbestos team.
  • Reporting & Continuous Improvement
    • Prepare detailed audit reports, identify trends, and recommend corrective and preventive actions.
    • Provide technical management information to support internal audits, UKAS assessments, and performance reviews.
    • Drive improvements in technical quality, efficiency, and consistency across asbestos services.

About You

You will be an experienced asbestos professional with strong technical credibility and a collaborative leadership style.

Essential / Preferred Criteria

  • Extensive practical experience in asbestos surveying and analytical work, including site-based auditing.
  • BOHS or RSPH qualifications including P402, P403, P404 (W504/M504 preferred).
  • CoCA desirable.
  • Strong working knowledge of UKAS, ISO 17020 and ISO 17025 requirements.
  • Proven experience supporting or leading audits and quality assurance activities.
  • Excellent communication, reporting, and influencing skills, with the ability to mentor and guide technical teams.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel across the Midlands.

  • Deputises for: Technical Manager during periods of absence
  • Line Management: Head of Property Compliance
  • Direct Reports: None (technical authority and mentorship)
