The Data Centre and Operations team is responsible for managing, maintaining and supporting the University’s virtual and physical server infrastructure and storage platforms. This underpinning infrastructure is critical to the successful delivery of teaching and learning, research activity, and the full range of administrative and support services across the University.
As an IT Infrastructure Engineer, you will play a key role in the day‑to‑day operation, monitoring and support of the University’s virtual and physical server infrastructure. You will also contribute to project delivery and ongoing service improvements, helping to enhance the performance, resilience and capability of core IT services. Working closely with infrastructure and network specialists, you will manage service requests, investigate and resolve incidents, and ensure systems remain secure, resilient and highly available for both staff and students. The role provides exposure to a broad and technically diverse environment, supporting enterprise services alongside research‑enabling platforms such as High-Performance Computing (HPC), virtual research environments, Microsoft Windows and Linux operating systems.
What We’re Looking For
- A degree in a relevant discipline, or equivalent practical experience in a similar infrastructure role.
- Practical experience or working knowledge of at least three of the following:
- Linux server installation, configuration and administration
- Microsoft Windows Server and Active Directory
- Backup and recovery systems
- HPC or research computing environments
- Network protocols used to access server and storage resources
- Scripting or simple automation (e.g. PowerShell, Bash, Python)
- Strong troubleshooting skills, with the ability to take ownership of issues through to resolution.
- Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Experience supporting Cisco UCS blade servers or similar enterprise hardware.
- Understanding of public or private cloud environments.
- Industry‑standard IT certifications, or willingness to work towards them.

Salary: £31,236 - £37,694 per annum (depending on experience)
Contract: Permanent, Full Time – 35 hrs/week
