Edgbaston Wellness Clinic is seeking a highly competent and motivated Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) to support the safe and efficient delivery of minor surgical and aesthetic procedures performed under local anaesthesia. This is a hands-on perioperative role within a private clinical environment where theatre standards, patient experience, and regulatory compliance are equally prioritised. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in theatre management, infection prevention, intravenous therapy, and end-to-end procedural coordination.

The ODP will be responsible for managing the full patient pathway within the theatre setting — from preparation and safety checks through to recovery, discharge, and documentation — ensuring that each procedure is delivered to the highest clinical and professional standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perioperative Practice (Local Anaesthetic Procedures)
    • Prepare and manage theatre environments for local anaesthetic procedures including minor surgery, aesthetic interventions, and regenerative treatments.
    • Conduct and document pre-procedure safety checks including WHO Surgical Safety Checklist compliance (adapted for local procedures).
    • Support clinicians during procedures, ensuring instruments, consumables, and emergency equipment are correctly prepared and functional.
    • Maintain sterile fields and adhere strictly to infection prevention and control standards.
    • Assist with patient positioning, comfort, and dignity throughout.
  • Intravenous Therapy and Cannulation
    • Competently perform peripheral cannulation and administer IV therapies as prescribed.
    • Monitor patients receiving IV medications or fluids, recognising early signs of adverse reactions.
    • Ensure safe preparation, checking, and disposal of IV medications in line with Medicines Management standards.
    • Maintain full documentation of IV therapy episodes.
  • Patient Monitoring & Safety
    • Undertake baseline observations and intra-procedure monitoring (pulse, BP, oxygen saturation, respiratory rate).
    • Identify early signs of clinical deterioration and escalate appropriately.
    • Ensure emergency equipment (oxygen, suction, defibrillator, emergency drugs) is checked daily and available.
    • Support safe recovery and discharge processes following local anaesthetic procedures.
  • Theatre & Clinical Environment Management
    • Manage stock levels, sterile supplies, and consumables.
    • Maintain equipment logs and ensure routine servicing checks are completed.
    • Ensure compliance with CQC fundamental standards and private healthcare governance expectations.
    • Oversee waste segregation and clinical waste disposal in accordance with HTM guidance.
  • Incident Reporting & Governance
    • Lead on internal incident reporting processes.
    • Complete and submit THIN reporting where applicable.
    • Participate in clinical audits, infection control reviews, and quality improvement initiatives.
    • Contribute to risk assessments and maintenance of theatre SOPs.
  • End-to-End Patient Pathway Management
    • Coordinate patient preparation, consent confirmation, and documentation.
    • Ensure smooth transition from admission through procedure to discharge.
    • Provide post-procedure advice and ensure patients understand aftercare instructions.
    • Maintain accurate, legally compliant records throughout.
Experience & Qualifications
  • Essential:
    • Registered Operating Department Practitioner with current HCPC registration.
    • Demonstrable experience within theatre environments.
    • Proven competence in peripheral cannulation and IV administration.
    • Strong understanding of local anaesthetic procedural workflows.
    • Experience using patient monitoring equipment.
    • Sound knowledge of infection control principles in procedural settings.
    • Excellent documentation standards and understanding of medicolegal accountability.
  • Desirable:
    • Experience within private healthcare or aesthetic/surgical clinics.
    • Familiarity with minor surgical, dermatological, or regenerative procedures.
    • Experience contributing to governance frameworks and audit processes.
    • ALS or ILS certification.
