About the Role
Last year, we moved over 1,600 packages containing radioactive material to support our operational fleet and defuelling stations. Our Radioactive Materials Package Design Authority plays a crucial role in ensuring that EDF Energy has transport solutions to move radioactive materials safely and compliantly, within the UK and overseas. We are looking for a Radioactive Materials Transport Package Engineer to work within the multidisciplinary Spent Fuel Services Team that delivers our Dual Mission: the safe defuelling of our AGR nuclear reactors and supporting continued operations at our existing AGR & PWR nuclear power stations. Additionally, we will support radioactive materials transport at Hinkley Point C, as they prepare for and commence operations.
Your role will be to manage the design, operation, maintenance, modification and technical requirements of a broad suite of radioactive material package designs including the A2 Spent Fuel Flask. You will work with a variety of stakeholders to provide effective management of these packages, alongside oversight of fleet processes governing the use of these transport packages. You will be based at our Gloucester office, but we are open to discussing and encouraging a flexible working pattern, that will include travelling to our stations and our supply partners.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Ensuring that radioactive material transport packages have been suitably designed and certified for use.
- Working with our supply chain partners on the design, manufacture, commissioning, licensing and maintenance of transport packages.
- Providing on-site technical support at our stations and suppliers to deliver the transport plan.
- The production and review of technical documents.
- Providing written guidance on the operation, maintenance and modification of transport packages, and act as a principal point of contact for end users.
- Providing technical support to projects involving the manufacture, commissioning, testing and maintenance of transport packages.
- Providing technical support/advice to end users on how radioactive material can be transported based on the package solutions available to the EDF Energy fleet.
- Ensuring adequate quality arrangements are in place at our stations and suppliers to ensure compliant package operation and maintenance.
- The management of through-life records for transport packages in service.
- Mentoring station and supplier staff on radioactive material transport regulations.
Who you are
You will hold a minimum of an HNC qualification in a Mathematics, Science or Engineering subject. A degree level qualification would be advantageous, as would experience of working on transport related projects for the nuclear sector.
Skills and experience we’re looking for you to bring into this role include:
- A high degree of technical and analytical expertise.
- Working knowledge of The Carriage of Dangerous Goods Regulations, and the IAEA Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material.
- Experience in the production and review of technical documents, including load restraint plans, finite-element analysis, and shielding calculations.
- A quick learning, problem solving mindset with a bias for action.
- Stakeholder management experience across multiple operational sites and suppliers, with the ability to influence and to create positive working relationships.
- The ability to react quickly to complex operational issues and give clear and timely advice to site staff.
- A clear, concise written and oral communication style.
- The ability to plan long term solutions and improvements whilst prioritising ongoing operations.
- Experience in managing suppliers and commercial contracts.
- Working knowledge of health, safety, and environmental legislation.
