The Opportunity

As an Independent Assessor, you’ll play a crucial role in strengthening the organisation’s resilience and ensuring it meets the highest standards in Radiation Protection, Emergency Preparedness and Radioactive Waste Management. You’ll be the trusted voice of independent challenge, helping to safeguard compliance with regulations, international standards and internal policies. This is a hybrid role at Aztec West in Bristol, with occasional travel to Hinkley Point C, Bridgwater to collaborate with environmental and corporate specialists. Who You Are

We’re looking for an Independent Assessor who brings expertise, sound judgement and the confidence to challenge. Do you offer…

  • A degree in physics or environmental science is essential.
  • External certification as a Radiation Waste Adviser (RWA) and Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) is required.
  • Significant experience or subject matter expertise in Radiation Protection, Radiography, Emergency Preparedness and/or Radioactive Waste Management.
  • Proven ability to lead assessment activities with strong organisation, independence and a proactive mindset.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present clear, evidence-based arguments to senior stakeholders.
  • Experience working on complex, highly technical projects with multiple interfaces.
  • Strong influencing skills, with the ability to engage effectively at all levels across a large, diverse project organisation.
  • A thorough understanding of UK nuclear regulatory requirements, including detailed knowledge of Ionising Radiation Regulations and other statutory obligations such as Health & Safety legislation, Site Licence Conditions and Environmental Permits.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Providing independent assessment and challenge of project and business processes.
  • Reporting findings through the IA Manager and presenting clear, evidence-based conclusions to senior leadership.
  • Using assessment insights to drive continuous improvement and alignment with national, international, INPO and WANO best practice.
  • Representing an independent view to internal committees and external regulators on processes, governance and compliance.
  • Collaborating with Assurance teams, including Security Assurance Branch, Independent Site Inspection and Independent Technical Assessment.
  • Analysing outputs from assessments, audits, learning events and regulatory inspections to evaluate process effectiveness and escalate issues in Radiation Protection, Radiography, Emergency Preparedness and Radioactive Waste Management.
  • Building strong networks across the project to understand upcoming activities and ensure Independent Assessment is effectively planned into delivery.
