The Opportunity

  • The chance to achieve an Engineering Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship Certificate, alongside a BTEC Level 3 qualification which offers a starting salary of £16,912.
  • This four-year programme combines practical learning with academic study.
  • You’ll develop specialist skills to maintain and operate our nuclear power stations, working alongside experienced professionals and building a strong foundation for your future career.
  • For the first two years, you’ll train at the National College for Nuclear in Somerset.
  • You’ll have access to cutting-edge facilities including virtual reality environments and outstanding student accommodation rated by Ofsted in 2024.
  • This nuclear engineering apprenticeship gives you hands-on experience and industry-recognised qualifications to start your career in the UK energy sector.

Your Work Location

  • You’ll be based at the National College for Nuclear Southern Hub in Somerset for the first two years, with accommodation available if you live outside the area.
  • You’ll then be based at your EDF location for years 3 and 4 which will be Heysham Power Station.

Who You Are

  • To be eligible for this EDF apprenticeship programme, you need to have five GCSEs at Grade C or above (or Grade 4 and above in the new grading structure), National 5 or equivalent, including maths, English and two science or technical subjects.
  • Following online testing, you may be invited to an in-person Assessment Centre, which could lead to an interview at a later date.

Security Vetting

To be appointed to this role, you will need to meet the criteria for Security Vetting, which will, ordinarily, require you to have been a resident of the UK for at least three of the last five years.
