The Black Hat Civils Supervisor is responsible for overseeing and coordinating civil construction activities across site operations, ensuring all works are carried out safely, efficiently, and in accordance with design specifications, quality standards, and site procedures. Acting as a key point of control and communication, the Black Hat Supervisor provides leadership, planning oversight, and assurance across multiple work fronts while maintaining compliance with nuclear site safety and quality requirements.

As part of our team, you will:

  • Provide non-working supervision and oversight of daily civil engineering and construction activities across the project.
  • Coordinate subcontractors, supervisors, operatives, plant usage, and logistics to ensure safe and efficient delivery of works.
  • Ensure all activities are carried out in accordance with approved construction drawings, RAMS, permits, and site quality procedures.
  • Lead daily coordination meetings, briefings, toolbox talks, and safety engagements to reinforce a positive safety culture.
  • Monitor site progress against programme requirements and escalate delays, risks, or resource issues where necessary.
  • Interface with construction management, engineering, quality, planning, logistics, and HSE teams to coordinate works effectively.
  • Ensure adequate supervision, competence, and authorisation arrangements are in place across all work activities.
  • Carry out regular inspections, audits, and site assurance checks to verify compliance with safety, quality, and environmental standards.
  • Review and verify daily records, permits, inspection documentation, and work completion reports.
  • Identify, report, and support resolution of hazards, near misses, unsafe conditions, and non-conformances.
  • Support quality assurance activities including inspection coordination, hold points, concrete records, reinforcement inspections, and as-built verification.
  • Promote continuous improvement, best practice, and right-first-time delivery across all civils activities.
  • Ensure environmental compliance through effective waste management, pollution prevention, and adherence to spill response procedures.
  • Provide leadership and visible presence on site while maintaining a non-working supervisory role at all times.

Essential Requirements:

  • Sound understanding of civil construction techniques including earthworks, drainage, formwork, reinforcement, and concrete operations.
  • Excellent knowledge of construction health & safety requirements, including RAMS, permit-to-work systems, lifting operations, and site compliance standards.
  • CSCS MPMS or Gold Card Supervisor Card.
  • SMSTS certification.
  • ILM level 3.

Desirable Requirements:

  • Experience working on nuclear or power generation projects (e.g. Hinkley Point C, Sellafield, or similar).
  • First Aid at Work certification.
  • CPCS or NPORS awareness/plant supervision knowledge.
  • Temporary Works Supervisor certification.
  • Awareness of QA/QC and quality management systems.

  • You must hold a clean driving licence (or with a maximum of 6 points) and be free from drugs and alcohol.
  • The role requires confidence, strong leadership capability, and the ability to coordinate multiple disciplines while maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and productivity.
  • Proven experience as a Black Hat Supervisor / Civils Supervisor / General Foreman on large-scale civil engineering or infrastructure projects.
  • Strong leadership and coordination skills with the ability to manage multiple subcontractors and work fronts simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication, planning, and organisational abilities.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and construction programmes.
