The Opportunity
This is your chance to join the Graphite Team at EDF UK, where you\’ll help tackle some of the most significant technical challenges across the AGR fleet. As part of the Graphite Technology Group, you\’ll contribute to the development and application of advanced modelling techniques that predict graphite core behaviour and support nuclear safety.
You\’ll work with a variety of modelling methods—ranging from physics-based to empirical and hybrid approaches—while collaborating with internal teams and external partners. This role offers a unique blend of technical depth and strategic influence, making it ideal for someone who thrives in a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment.
This role follows a hybrid working model, combining both home and office-based work, with frequent travel to Gloucester Business Park.
Pay, Benefits & Culture
The salary range associated with this role is between £45,641 – £95,993, however we will be looking to appoint within £61,730 – £95,993. You’ll be appointed based on the parameters outlined in the Company Agreement as well as your existing salary, competence, experience and qualifications. What You’ll Be Doing
In this role, you’ll develop and refine modelling techniques to forecast graphite core weight loss—an essential factor in maintaining nuclear safety and performance. You’ll integrate inspection data with diverse modelling strategies to assess uncertainties and improve prediction accuracy.
You’ll help define safety limits and lead the technical direction of the Graphite Research and Development programme, working closely with academic institutions and EDF R&D. Your work will support both current AGR operations and future Net Zero technologies like AMRs and SMRs.
From hands-on technical analysis to managing external projects, you’ll ensure high standards in graphite behaviour modelling and contribute to safety cases, inspection strategies, and core monitoring. You’ll also have opportunities to expand your expertise across related technical domains.
Who You Are
You bring a strong foundation in science, engineering, or mathematics—holding at least a HNC or equivalent qualification in these subjects. Your analytical mindset, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail enable you to tackle complex challenges with confidence. You’re self-motivated, results-driven, and eager to continuously improve.
You communicate clearly, influence effectively, and thrive in collaborative environments. Ideally, you’ll have experience or interest in areas such as materials science, numerical modelling, statistical analysis, or software development. Prior exposure to graphite behaviour or the nuclear industry is a bonus, but not essential—we value your curiosity and commitment to learning.
