Our team's primary mission is to develop sophisticated market forecasting models and asset optimisation tools. These tools are instrumental in supporting EDF Trading's proprietary activities and optimising the EDF Group portfolio. The team efforts are directed towards both the short-term electricity markets as well as the longer-term horizon and other commodities. We work closely with the trading desks and other analyst teams in both locations, fostering a collaborative environment that drives our success.
Location: London (or Paris)
Position purpose
We are looking for an analyst with a strong interest in battery energy storage systems (BESS) and short-term European power markets. This position offers a unique opportunity to work on BESS optimisation within an established, utility-backed trading house. In this role, you will collaborate closely with trading desks and analysts to strengthen our analytical capabilities in battery optimisation, supporting EDF Trading's existing battery activities and leveraging the knowledge on BESS to enhance our power market models.
Your responsibilities will include designing and implementing a dedicated modelling platform and developing optimisation algorithms that capture bidding strategies across multiple markets.
Main responsibilities
- Develop and enhance internal expertise on battery systems, covering optimisation and trading in short-term power markets and ancillary services, analysis of European national specificities, and physical dispatch operations.
- Design and implement advanced models for BESS analysis and optimisation, including strategies for sequential multi-market participation.
- Provide analytical support for BESS tolling agreements, adapting models to specific constraints, designing portfolio optimisation for co-located assets, challenging BESS optimisers' results, and reviewing external studies and methodologies.
- Conduct market impact assessments of BESS on short-term power and ancillary service prices, delivering insights to trading desks and improving forecasting models.
Technical requirements
Key requirements:
- Optimisation skills: strong knowledge of optimisation techniques and mathematical modelling.
- Programming proficiency: in Python or another relevant language.
- Educational background: A degree in a quantitative subject (Math, Optimisation, Physics, Computer Science, Engineering, etc.) will provide a solid foundation for your work with us.
- Proficiency in English (written and spoken).
Beneficial skills and experience
- Prior experience in BESS trading and optimisation is highly desirable.
- Ability to design platform architecture for analytical and modelling tools. Familiarity with SQL and NoSQL databases, cloud environments (Azure), and web technologies for front-end development is a plus, though not mandatory.
- Proficiency in French beneficial.
Person specification
- Analytical mindset, desire to learn and iterate quickly.
- Proactive and adaptable, positive attitude.
- Strong work ethic.
- Good communication skills.
- Team-oriented and customer-focused.
Hours of work: 8.30am – 5.30pm / 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Occasional on-call support on weekends at an estimated interval of two months.
We are committed to equipping our employees with the tools that will enable them to fulfil their job to the highest standard. To that end we offer a wide range of technical and personal development courses both in-house and through third-party providers.
