The Energy Market Analytics department houses the Optimisation and Trading Analytical Team, a dynamic group of 10 professionals based in both Paris and London.

Our team’s primary mission is to develop sophisticated market forecasting models and asset optimisation tools. These tools are instrumental in supporting EDF Trading’s proprietary activities and optimising the EDF Group portfolio.

The team efforts are directed towards both the short-term electricity markets as well as the longer-term horizon and other commodities. We work closely with the trading desks and other analyst teams in both locations, fostering a collaborative environment that drives our success.

Position purpose

We are seeking an analyst with a keen interest in the energy sector and power markets. This role presents an opportunity to be at the forefront of our analytical tools for short-term power markets analysis (spanning from day-ahead to two weeks-ahead).

As a member of our London team, you will contribute to the improvement of our analytical tools based on predictive and prescriptive analytics to provide analytical insights into the short-term power markets. You will work in close collaboration with three other team members, each contributing their diverse skills and perspectives. Your work will involve communicating with internal stakeholders such as power analysts, software engineers and traders.

During the initial phase of your role, you will contribute to the development and support of our application, providing you with a practical understanding of the methodology and key factors essential for accurate price modelling and forecasting in power markets. As you gain experience in the role, you will have the opportunity to take on a more strategic focus, leveraging advanced market insights and/or sophisticated mathematical modelling techniques.

Main responsibilities

In this role your responsibilities will include

Model development: development and enhancement of our applications for modelling and analysing short-term power markets.

Analysis and trading desk support: support to power trading desks by producing bespoke analytics on identified topics to improve performance, while ensuring application stability and reliability.

Innovative Approaches: exploring and proposing modelling approaches to enhance our analytics (machine learning, mathematical modelling, …).

Team Collaboration: work in synergy with other teams of analysts located in Paris and London. This role will involve occasional travel to our Paris office.

First experience (0-3 years) in the development of analytics/modelling in the energy sector, Analytical mindset: Your ability to dissect complex problems and find effective solutions will be crucial in this role.

Programming proficiency: in Python or another relevant language

Commercial awareness: Understanding the broader business implications of our projects will help deliver high-quality analyses.

Educational background: A degree in a quantitative subject (Math, Physics, Computer Science, Engineering, etc.) will provide a solid foundation for your work with us.

Interest in energy markets

Beneficial skills and experience:

Power market experience: be it modelling, asset optimisation, portfolio management, or trading, any specific experience in power markets is a plus.

Tech stack: we use SQL and noSQL databases, cloud tools (Azure), web technologies for front-end development. Although not required, any additional knowledge in one of those would be a plus.
