A Project Engineer responsible for delivering activities in the Hinkley Point C nuclear power station to meet safety, quality, time and cost targets while building strong stakeholder relationships.
Key Responsibilities
- Drive delivery of contract or package activities to ensure they are delivered safely, on time, within budget, and meet business and technical requirements.
- Develop and implement strategies and plans in line with the overall programme execution plan (PEP).
- Maintain effective communication with all stakeholders and execute the enterprise project (EP) strategies within the contract or package of work.
- Monitor and manage the progress of the schedule – track progress against milestones, deadlines, and budget, and report to key stakeholders.
- Anticipate, manage, and resolve issues within the contract or package; identify risks and facilitate resolution.
- Ensure lessons-learnt and knowledge capture are practiced as business as usual.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all project team members.
General Management
- Provide engineering and management resource to direct, supervise and support all project-related operations.
- Plan, develop and implement all activities associated with the efficient and profitable running of the assigned projects.
Customer Service
- Maintain high standards of customer service.
- Monitor, review and improve through the implementation of appropriate procedures and initiatives.
- Maintain close contact with existing customers and assist the Senior Project Manager in developing new customers as required.
Standards and Compliance
- Ensure that project operations comply with all relevant standards and legislation through appropriate formal procedures.
- Liaise with support departmental personnel to obtain necessary advice or assistance.
Operational Procedures
- Plan and allocate tasks to assigned personnel, monitor workloads, and ensure efficiency and profitability.
- Prepare operational project programmes aligned with the main project programme.
- Prepare and monitor material procurement schedules and ensure availability on site.
- Obtain best possible prices through new quotations and manage supplier relationships.
- Arrange and attend sub-contract reviews and coordinate with the Quantity Surveyor as required.
- Plan site set-up arrangements and procure appropriate facilities.
- Monitor and coordinate work performed by junior engineers and other labour forces.
- Review and interpret proposed designs, drawings and specifications to ensure compliance.
- Represent the business at meetings with customers, consultants, sub-contractors and other relevant organisations.
- Inspect and monitor quality of installed works and produce zero-defect reports.
- Research and prepare performance reports and other required documentation.
- Perform miscellaneous individual and group related duties as assigned.
Commercial
- Monitor individual project commercial performance through job cost reports and work-in-progress reports.
- Assist in preparing ongoing and final project accounts, ensuring timely variation agreements.
- Present final accounts to the Senior Project Manager and manage agreement prior to customer certification.
- Prepare sub-contract orders and monitor change orders and payments in conjunction with the Quantity Surveyor.
Administration
- Ensure project files (hard copy and electronic) are set up and maintained per company procedures.
- Carry out project administrative duties consistent with company requirements.
- Provide day-to-day administrative support to meet project management needs.
Personnel
- Communicate clearly with project employees, monitor performance and quality.
Health and Safety
- Maintain company standards for health and safety across all project activities.
- Support incident and accident enquiries and ensure appropriate actions are taken.
- Initiate and monitor site health and safety inspections and implement recommendations.
- Maintain H&S documentation (toolbox talk registers, risk assessments, plant checks) and ensure up-to-date records.
Business Development
- Maintain and develop existing customer contacts in association with the Senior Project Manager.
- Implement and conclude specific projects agreed with the Senior Project Manager to improve overall project performance.
Qualifications and Skills
- Degree or HNC in Electrical Engineering (LV, HV, MEP installations) or working towards HNC (preferred).
- Educated to nuclear installation standards including safety-critical systems.
- Working towards a professional qualification in Project Management such as APM PMQ (desirable).
- Track record of delivering projects in complex environments, ideally within the nuclear energy sector or similar regulated environment (desirable).
- Experience working on heavily unionised sites and with trade union representatives.
- Experience with qualified equipment products and services, including supporting the EQ process.
- Experience working with the QA team to ensure quality compliance (records, audits, process).
- Understanding of nuclear safety culture and its role in the health & safety agenda.
- Demonstrated knowledge of project management and experience in managing engineering and/or construction activities.
- Strong project management, financial management, change management and facilitation skills.
- Successful experience engaging multi-level stakeholders, including contractors, consultants and advisors.
- Working knowledge of CDM Regulations.
- Understanding of nuclear quality assurance and control.
- Experience designing, manufacturing and installing plant and equipment (LV, HV, MEP) including nuclear-grade and safety-critical equipment.
