Reporting into the Financial Close Director, this role plays a key part in supporting the financial close process and the accounting activities required to produce accurate underwriting results across insurance operations. You will work closely with finance, actuarial, reinsurance, FP&A, IT, and external vendors, taking ownership of projects and initiatives to enhance financial systems, controls, and processes. This role offers significant exposure to systems transformation and the opportunity to drive meaningful change across the finance function.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close process, ensuring accurate and timely delivery of underwriting results.
- Support analysis of premiums, claims, reserves, and reinsurance balances to ensure accuracy at an appropriate level of detail (e.g. line of business, accident year, currency).
- Perform and support reconciliations between source systems, actuarial data, sub-ledger systems, and the general ledger.
- Query, investigate, and resolve accounting and data issues across financial systems and the general ledger.
- Coordinate system support activities to enable efficient technical accounting close processes.
- Monitor, troubleshoot, and support data uploads, mappings, and integrations between source systems, data warehouses, and the general ledger.
- Raise, manage, and track system tickets and change requests through to resolution in collaboration with IT and third-party vendors.
- Support system fixes, upgrades, patches, and enhancements, including performing and documenting user acceptance testing (UAT).
- Maintain documentation for financial systems-related processes, controls, and procedures.
- Assist with internal and external audits by providing system-related information, documentation, and explanations.
- Actively contribute to the enhancement and optimisation of financial systems and close processes.
- Recommend and support improvements to workflows relating to premiums, claims, and reinsurance accounting.
- Participate in wider finance technology transformation initiatives and governance forums.
- Ensure compliance with relevant legal and regulatory requirements applicable to financial reporting and systems.
Core Skills and Experience
- Qualified accountant or qualified by experience.
- Strong knowledge of insurance technical accounting, including premiums, claims, reinsurance, reserves, DAC, UPR, and IBNR.
- Proven experience supporting financial close processes in an insurance or reinsurance environment.
- Demonstrated experience delivering system or process improvement projects.
- Strong understanding of financial systems, general ledgers, and sub-ledger environments.
- Ability to analyse and work with large datasets across multiple tools and formats.
- Advanced Excel skills; experience with data, reporting, or analytics tools is advantageous.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to investigate complex accounting and system issues.
- Proactive, self-directed approach with strong ownership and accountability.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain technical issues to non-technical stakeholders.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
