Overview

As Accounting Manager in a leading specialist insurer, you will own the monthly, quarterly and annual underwriting results across Syndicate and company operations, ensuring robust controls and accurate reporting. You will lead a small accounting team and collaborate with Finance, Actuarial, FP&A, Reinsurance and Regulatory Reporting to deliver timely, high-quality data. You drive improvements to month-end processes and financial controls while ensuring US GAAP compliance. This role offers a chance to shape technical accounting practices within a complex, cross-functional environment.

Responsibilities

  • Own monthly, quarterly and annual underwriting results including premiums, earnings, claims, reserves, IBNR and acquisition costs.
  • Lead, manage and develop a small team of accountants.
  • Own the month-end accounting process and coordinate related activities.
  • Design, maintain and enhance financial controls, reconciliations and schedules for technical insurance balances.
  • Ensure accurate booking and allocation of underwriting results across lines of business, locations, accident years and statutory classes.
  • Oversee technical general ledger reconciliations and resolve data issues and control exceptions.
  • Maintain data quality and integrity across core financial systems and the general ledger.
  • Own the reconciliation of legal entity and origin basis underwriting results.
  • Provide information and supporting schedules to internal and external auditors.
  • Partner with FP&A, Actuarial, Reinsurance, Regulatory Reporting and other teams to deliver accurate underwriting data.
  • Drive continuous improvement across month-end processes, controls and reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant accounting standards, primarily US GAAP.

Key requirements

  • ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent experience.
  • Strong experience in insurance technical accounting, ideally covering both Lloyd’s and company markets.
  • Strong understanding of underwriting results, technical insurance balances and financial controls.
  • Previous experience managing and developing a small accounting team.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with experience working with large and complex datasets.
  • Advanced Excel skills.
  • Excellent organisational and time-management skills.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Ability to take ownership, manage competing priorities and deliver to tight deadlines.
  • Experience with Alteryx and/or SQL would be advantageous.
