Job Description: Building Physics Engineer
Sector: Building Services
Location: Glasgow or Edinburgh, Scotland
Job Type: Full-time, Permanent
Overview:
We are seeking a Building Physics Engineer to join our client’s dynamic team working within the building services industry. Based in either Glasgow or Edinburgh, the role involves applying fundamental principles to the design, operation, and performance of buildings to ensure optimal energy efficiency, comfort, and sustainability. The ideal candidate will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to deliver cutting-edge, high-performance buildings that comply with local regulations and meet client expectations.
Key Responsibilities:
-
Energy Modelling & Simulation:
Use simulation tools (e.g., IES, TAS, EnergyPlus, or similar) to model and analyse building energy performance. Evaluate thermal comfort, day lighting, energy demand, HVAC systems, and overall building performance. -
Building Performance Analysis:
Conduct detailed analysis of building designs, focusing on energy efficiency, environmental sustainability, and comfort parameters (thermal, acoustic, lighting). Provide recommendations for improvements to achieve higher performance and sustainability. -
Sustainability Consulting:
Support the integration of sustainability strategies such as low-carbon technologies, renewable energy systems, and low-energy design principles. Advise on achieving certifications such as BREEAM, LEED, or Passivhaus. -
Thermal Comfort & Indoor Air Quality:
Analyse and provide advice on the thermal comfort of indoor spaces, ensuring buildings maintain optimal conditions for occupants. Contribute to air quality strategies, including ventilation and humidity control. -
Climate Resilience:
Ensure building designs are resilient to climate change, factoring in long-term trends like rising temperatures, flooding, and extreme weather events. Help future-proof buildings through intelligent design and building services interventions. -
Collaboration:
Work closely with architects, engineers, project managers, and other stakeholders to integrate building physics principles seamlessly into designs. Collaborate with clients and contractors to implement sustainable and energy-efficient solutions. -
Building Regulations & Standards Compliance:
Ensure that designs comply with UK building regulations, environmental standards, and relevant industry codes of practice. Stay updated on changes to regulations affecting energy performance and building design. -
Technical Reports & Presentations:
Prepare detailed technical reports and presentations to communicate findings, recommendations, and design solutions clearly to clients and project teams. -
Project Management Support:
Provide technical support throughout the design and construction phases of projects, offering advice and solutions to complex building performance challenges.
Qualifications & Experience:
-
Degree: A degree in Building Physics, Architectural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
-
Professional Experience:
At least 2-5 years of experience in building physics, energy modelling, or building services engineering, ideally with exposure to the UK market. -
Software Skills:
Proficiency in building energy modeling and simulation software (e.g., IES, TAS, EnergyPlus, or similar). Experience with BIM (Building Information Modelling) tools is advantageous. -
Sustainability Certifications:
Knowledge of sustainability frameworks such as BREEAM, LEED, Passivhaus, or similar would be beneficial. Experience in obtaining or advising on environmental certifications is a plus. -
Building Regulations Knowledge:
Strong understanding of UK building regulations, particularly around energy efficiency and sustainability. -
Communication Skills:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills to liaise with clients, architects, and engineers and to produce high-quality reports. -
Analytical Mindset:
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with an ability to make data-driven decisions.
Desirable Skills:
- Knowledge of HVAC systems design and performance.
- Experience with post-occupancy evaluation and performance testing.
- An understanding of smart building technologies and building automation systems (BMS).
What We Offer:
- Competitive salary based on experience.
- Opportunities for professional development and training.
- A collaborative, inclusive, and innovative working environment.
- Flexible working arrangements (Hybrid and remote options).
- The chance to work on high-profile, cutting-edge projects that have a positive impact on sustainability and energy efficiency.
