Eden Brown are seeking an enthusiastic Payroll Officer for a Further Education College in West Yorkshire. This is a full time permanent role to start in February. This is an excellent opportunity for a payroll professional who thrives in a detail-focused, values-driven environment and is looking to make a meaningful contribution within the education sector.
The Role
Reporting to the Payroll, Compensation & HR Systems Manager, the Payroll Officer will play a key role in ensuring the accurate and timely processing of payroll for College staff. The post holder will support the end-to-end payroll function, working with sensitive personal and financial data while maintaining the highest standards of confidentiality and compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Collate, calculate and input variable payroll data into the HR & Payroll system
- Process starters, leavers and contractual changes accurately and efficiently
- Check payroll information for accuracy, authorisation and completeness prior to processing
- Process monthly payroll, including payslips, expenses and statutory payments (SSP, SMP, SPP etc.)
- Prepare manual payslips where required, using HMRC and pension guidance
- Liaise with internal teams to ensure payroll data sources (e.g. registers, increments, pay awards) are accurate
- Keep up to date with statutory, legislative and organisational changes affecting payroll and pensions
- Support payroll audits, year-end reconciliations and statutory returns
- Investigate and resolve payroll queries and discrepancies promptly
- Contribute to continuous improvement of payroll systems and processes
About You
To be successful in this role, you will bring a strong payroll background and a proactive, solutions-focused approach.
Essential requirements include:
- Level 2 qualification in English and Maths (or equivalent)
- Level 4 qualification in Payroll, Accountancy, or equivalent professional experience
- Previous experience in a payroll and/or HR environment
- Sound knowledge of payroll legislation and data protection requirements
- Strong understanding of payroll processes across the full employee lifecycle
- Confidence using Microsoft Office and payroll systems
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex information clearly
- High levels of discretion when handling confidential information
