As a DOOR TRIM Lead Engineer, you will be responsible for overseeing the design, development, and integration of interior panels and related interior components from concept to production. You will lead a team of engineers, coordinate with cross-functional teams, and ensure that designs meet performance, quality, cost, and timing objectives while adhering to regulatory standards.
Responsibilities include:
- Lead and manage the complete development lifecycle of DOOR TRIM components, from concept through production.
- Provide technical direction to engineering teams on materials, manufacturing processes, and assembly feasibility.
- Ensure compliance with safety, durability, NVH, and aesthetic requirements in collaboration with CAE, materials, and manufacturing teams.
- Define and manage component specifications, ensuring alignment with OEM standards and industry best practices.
- Work with suppliers to validate tooling, materials, and production processes, ensuring manufacturability and cost efficiency.
- Drive DFM (Design for Manufacturing) and DFA (Design for Assembly) principles to optimize design solutions.
- Manage engineering change processes (ECRs, ECNs, PCNs), ensuring effective implementation with minimal impact on project timing.
- Oversee prototype builds, validation, and testing activities, ensuring design intent is maintained.
- Conduct DFMEA, PFMEA, and root cause analysis to proactively address potential failures.
- Support launch activities, issue resolution, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Coordinate with interior design and electrical teams.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Mechanical, Automotive, or Manufacturing Engineering.
- 8+ years of experience in IP/console engineering within the automotive industry.
- Strong expertise in plastic injection molding, foaming, wrapping, painting, and assembly processes.
- Proficiency in CAD software (CATIA V5) and PLM tools.
- Experience leading cross-functional teams and supplier collaborations.
- Strong understanding of safety regulations (FMVSS, ECE, VDA), fit & finish, and durability targets.
- Knowledge of interior component integration, including ambient lighting, airbags, displays, and HVAC vents.
- Proven experience in cost management, supplier negotiations, and product optimization.
- Strong problem-solving skills with experience in DFMEA, PFMEA, and root cause analysis.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management abilities.
- Experience with sustainable materials and lightweighting strategies (desirable).
- Knowledge of smart surfaces, digital displays, and advanced user interfaces (desirable).
- Familiarity with APQP, PPAP, and automotive quality processes (desirable).
- Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing certification (desirable).
