About the Role
Complete Classroom Services is seeking a reliable, proactive, and hardworking School Caretaker to support the day-to-day maintenance, security, and upkeep of school premises in Newham and surrounding East London areas.
The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the school environment remains safe, secure, clean, and well-maintained for students, staff, and visitors. This is a hands-on role requiring practical maintenance skills, a strong awareness of health and safety, and the ability to respond effectively to site-related issues.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out day-to-day maintenance and minor repairs across the school site
- Ensure the school buildings and grounds are clean, safe, secure, and well-presented
- Undertake opening and closing duties, including security checks and alarm systems
- Monitor and maintain school facilities, including heating, lighting, plumbing, and general building fabric
- Conduct routine site inspections and report any maintenance or health and safety concerns
- Assist with setting up rooms and facilities for school activities and events
- Liaise with contractors and support maintenance works on site
- Ensure compliance with health and safety procedures and school policies
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities and site checks
- Respond promptly to emergency maintenance issues and site incidents
- Support the school leadership team with general site management duties
- Carry out grounds maintenance duties where required to ensure outdoor areas remain safe and tidy
The Ideal Candidate Will Have
- Previous experience as a School Caretaker, Site Assistant, Facilities Assistant, Maintenance Operative, or in a similar role
- Good practical skills across general maintenance, repairs, and building upkeep
- Knowledge of health and safety procedures within a school or similar environment
- Ability to work independently and use initiative
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Reliable, flexible, and professional approach to work
- Basic IT skills, including email and record keeping
- Good physical fitness and willingness to undertake manual tasks
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
- Previous experience working within a school, academy, college, or educational setting
- Health and Safety qualification (e.g., IOSH or equivalent)
- Basic trade skills such as plumbing, decorating, carpentry, or electrical maintenance
- Understanding of safeguarding requirements within schools
- Experience with site security procedures and alarm systems
