We are looking for a Mid Level Software Engineer to join our Web team. Our mission is to grow our core user base by helping new and existing audiences to discover and engage with a wider breadth of our content through a fast and intuitive web experience. economist.com is an essential window into our outstanding content, video and audio and we’re growing our engineering team to help our users discover and read more of our content and importantly, to keep coming back. We practise an agile process, which allows us to ship small and fast getting features into the hands of customers quickly. We trust our engineers to ship high-quality code, removing barriers between the subject matter experts, product, and engineering. Our aim is to get you shipping in your first week.

How you’ll contribute
- Take technical responsibility for all stages in the software development life-cycle
- Apply and uphold team-based standards for programming tools and techniques and advise on their application
- Make pragmatic decisions about technical trade-offs within your code
- Design, write and deliver software aligned with the strategic direction of the business
- Work within, and encourage a DevOps culture and Continuous Delivery process
- Take ownership of your personal development, be curious and eager to learn
- Work within Next.js and React apps, deploying into AWS
- Help shape and deliver our varied quarterly roadmaps
- Help the team get well defined tasks from backlog to production
- Maintain documentation on our applications, making it easy for future engineers to interact with our systems and code
- Regularly contribute openly to team meetings (and encouraging others to do so)
- Champion the health, quality and observability of our projects
- Ship to production on your first day!
Who you are
- Experience using React in production
- Experience in unit testing
- Knowledge of optimising website performance and accessibility
- Knowledge of software testing
- Good communication and teamwork skills
- Experience working within agile cross-functional product teams
- A desire to learn new technologies outside of your comfort zone
- Experience using the Next.js framework is desirable but not essential
- Experience in developing on cloud infrastructure (AWS) is desirable
