We are inviting you to join our team as a Research Assistant focused on implementing cutting‑edge dynamic optimisation algorithms on existing flight systems. This part‑time, eight‑month role provides a great opportunity to work directly with industry collaborators at Rolls‑Royce to design the technologies that will enable next‑generation flight solutions in today’s cockpits.
You will deploy advanced dynamic optimisation algorithms on embedded hardware to demonstrate their benefits in reducing energy consumption and extending the operational lifespan of gas turbine engines. Detailed simulation models, system identification and model reduction techniques will be employed to support the development.
Working with a Research Software Engineer, you will also support the development of the graphical user interface to assist the decision‑making of flight crews. Towards the end of the project, you will lead the work on demonstrating the workflow and benefits on a representative flight simulator to support industrial take‑up.
As a Research Assistant, you will require conceptual understanding and practical knowledge of dynamic optimisation, optimisation‑based control, and their software implementations. Specifically, experience in the MATLAB/Simulink software development environment is essential. Knowledge of wider optimisation methods would also be an advantage.
These skills will support methodological developments, performance analysis, testing, and validation activities carried out as part of the project deliverables. This innovative research has considerable potential to make a significant impact in future flight operations.
£32,080 to £33,951 per annum (full time equivalent; pro rata). 60%: £19,248.00 - £20,370.60 per annum. 80%: £25,664.00 - £27,160.80 per annum.
