We have an exciting opportunity in the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering to join the i4i-funded project β€˜Step-sensor: Can sensor-based insoles detect changes in step quality associated with acquired brain injury?’ - a collaborative project between the school, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, and Walk With Path Ltd.

We are seeking candidates with, or close to completing, a PhD related to biomechanics, as well as significant experience working in a gait biomechanics laboratory. Strong research skills with a good knowledge of protocol design are required. Since this project involves working with individuals who have had a recent stroke, excellent communication skills and experience working with participants are essential. Previous experience with wearable technology is desirable but not mandatory.

Candidates should be creative and flexible in their approach to the study, and capable of collaborating with external partners to share knowledge developed through the project. The role will also involve conducting patient focus groups, so you will work alongside the team to facilitate these activities.

Project summary: Foot-drop after a stroke can affect around 30% of patients and increase the risk of falls post-discharge. We have been working with Walk With Path to evaluate a smart insole in the gait laboratory within a healthy population. This project aims to investigate whether the insole can measure changes in foot pressure distribution associated with foot-drop and assess its effectiveness for long-term evaluation.
