The University of Stirling invites applications for up to three PhD positions in Applied Economics within the Applied Economics Lab , a vibrant research cluster in the Economics Division of Stirling Business School. The lab brings together researchers working across a wide range of empirical fields, including: Labour economics Macroeconomics Sports economics Political economy Consumer economics Environmental economics, and Public policy We welcome candidates with a strong background in economics, econometrics, or related disciplines, and a clear interest in exploring real-world questions—policy-related or otherwise. Applicants are encouraged to propose research topics that align with the Lab’s areas of strength. Research Training Environment As a PhD student within the Economics Division, you will have access to a broad programme of research training opportunities. These include advanced methods courses, data skills workshops, and an engaging schedule of internal and external seminars. You will also have the opportunity to be part of the Scottish Graduate Programme in Economics (SGPE) —a collaborative network of eight leading Scottish universities offering advanced training, summer schools, and academic events across Scotland. This network offers a unique peer community and access to cutting-edge expertise in a diverse range of applied and theoretical fields within economics. Eligibility and Requirements Essential: An undergraduate degree (minimum 2:1 or equivalent) and a Master’s degree, with at least one in Economics or a closely related field. Strong quantitative skills, with experience in econometrics and statistical analysis. Experience working with large datasets and appropriate software (e.g., Stata, R, Python, Julia, MATLAB). Excellent written and oral communication skills in English. A strong motivation to pursue independent research and contribute to team-based activities, such as teaching. Desirable: Both undergraduate and Master’s degrees in Economics or a closely related field. Demonstrated ability to engage in academic writing or publication. Knowledge of advanced computational tools or experience with applied policy evaluation. Funding and Fees Fees : Home tuition fees covered in full. Teaching : Paid teaching opportunities during the academic year as part of professional development. Stipend : No stipend is provided. International students are welcome to apply, but should note that the award will cover only the home fee amount (c. £5,000); the remaining international fee must be self-funded.
