The Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy at the University of Cambridge is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Teaching Associate to contribute to the delivery, development, and innovation of our undergraduate and graduate teaching programmes.

This role provides an exciting opportunity to support and sustain the University's international reputation for teaching excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teaching and Supervising
  • Plan, prepare, and deliver lectures, practical classes, and other teaching sessions.
  • Develop teaching materials, including lecture handouts and online resources.
  • Teaching and Programme Direction
  • Contribute to curriculum design and revision within the established programme framework.
  • Assessment and Examining
  • Set and mark examination papers and coursework, including undergraduate project reports.
  • Provide constructive feedback to students and participate in examination boards.
  • Provide academic references for students.
  • Departmental Duties
  • Attend departmental meetings and undertake administrative responsibilities as appropriate.
  • Line Management
  • Coordinate teaching staff involved in module delivery.
  • Student Recruitment and Admissions
  • Participate in student outreach, including open days and delivering outreach sessions.

Professional Development and Scholarship - Attend pedagogical conferences and contribute to the development of innovative online teaching resources.

The ideal candidate for this role should have

  • Proven experience of successfully developing and delivering teaching at the university level, including lectures and small-group sessions.
  • Experience in practical laboratory teaching.
  • Familiarity with virtual learning environments and teaching platforms.
  • Proven academic expertise in materials science or a related field.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, capable of explaining complex concepts to non-specialists.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritise effectively, and meet deadlines.
  • A Ph D in materials science, metallurgy, or a related field, or equivalent demonstrable experience.
  • A teaching qualification (or willingness to pursue one).

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 30th June 2029 in the first instance.
