The Department of War Studies is one of the only academic departments in the world focused on understanding the complex realm of conflict, security, and international politics through inter-disciplinary teaching, research and engagement. We have a large and diverse faculty, with varied theoretical and methodological expertise in areas including, but not limited to, conflict resolution, contemporary and historical warfare, gender, international relations, migration and borders, security studies, strategic studies, technology and violence.

The Department of War Studies seeks to appoint a Lecturer in Security Studies (Economic Statecraft) to contribute to the Department’s teaching and research capacity. We welcome applications from candidates whose research and teaching will contribute to and expand our expertise at the intersection of security and economic statecraft. Given the expertise of current members of the Department, we are seeking applications from candidates with a research focus on issues including economic warfare and the weaponisation of trade, defence economics, and/or economic resilience. We are especially interested in applications from those whose research focuses on economic security in the contemporary world.
Applications from researchers who use quantitative or mixed methods and who can contribute to our teaching in this area are especially welcome. The successful candidate will have an emerging track record of high-quality publications and a clear research agenda in the area of the security studies and contemporary economic statecraft. They will develop this track record through a portfolio of individual and/or joint research projects and will work to secure external research funding. We offer research mentorship in support of these activities. Upon completion of their probation, the role holder will also be expected to supervise PhD students.
The successful candidate will also be responsible for delivering high-quality, innovative teaching on compulsory and optional modules at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. They will contribute to our teaching on contemporary security issues, contemporary statecraft and national security, especially in regard to economic security and statecraft, but may also contribute to teaching in the broad areas of security studies, war studies and international politics. They will work with students from a wide range of backgrounds and will be responsible for contributing to student success.
The successful candidate will also play a role in the institutional and intellectual development of the Department and undertake Departmental, School, Faculty and University administrative duties as required. Appointments can only be made at Lecturer level, Grade 6. It will not be possible to make appointments at more senior grades, or to exceed the salary advertised. This is a full-time post, and you will be offered a fixed‑term contract until 31 August 2029. £45,031 to £52,514 per annum including London Weighting Allowance.
